FF7/FF8 play on PS3 with borders?

Both my digital copies of FF7/FF8 play with borders even on full screen

I guess it's the best they can do with that resolution, but I thought they could've maybe stretched it more. I can mess about with my TV settings a bit to blow the image up.

I just want to check everyone else is the same, borders on top and bottom?

edit: I know it's quite hard to see in that pic, but borders are probably an inch all round, if not a bit more, that's a 40" screen.

OT: Oh good god, I am glad I didn't buy these. Just looking at a photo of those graphics is making my eyes bleed.

Well I have a PSP so I'll mostly use them on it, but it's really not that bad once you start playing it and the save on the PS3 can be copied to the PSP and vice versa so it's not like you need to sit through a whole play through on either.

Looks on par with most Wii games

i did not see the reason to purchase these ( i own the original PS1 discs) and oddly the slim PS3 plays PS1 games from the disk just not PS2 lol

I own them as well, but it's the type of game I'll play on the whim, and ripping it to the PSP through "illegal" means is a pain in the ass. I'm constantly swapping what's on my PSP due to me having low memory space.

A FF7/FF8 disc would never be at home in my PS3 for long enough, so when lying in bed at night it's nice to know I can just boot up either off the XMB and play them for a bit, not need to go find old PS1 discs every time.

Also is there anyway to play FF7 with the analog sticks? Have to use the d-pad and I've found no way to change that so far :p

Nope, even on the original PlayStation with the original discs, you couldn't use the analog sticks to control FF7 as I think it was released before the dualshock was. I think pressing the option to turn the analog on, on the dualshock, made it so you couldn't move at all but it's been a long time so I may be mistaken.

Ahhh it seems the ****ty pal version of FF7 only runs in 50hz so it not only has borders on the sides, but top/bottom as well. When I turn off/on (cant remember which it is) overscan/full pixel on my TV I only have 1 inch borders on each side of FF8. FF7 has borders on bottom/top still.

Looks like I'll be rebuying it from the USA store, as the same thing happens on the PSP IIRC, which is why everyone always downloaded the NTSC version for their PSPs before Sony legally gave the options.

Not on PS3 but with the PSP you can change the control type to Type 4 and use the analog.

I don't see borders to the top just about an inch to the sides when I set it Full. Going to post pics in a moment.

The 50Hz thing sounds about right - I used to experience that with older games.

I'm fairly sure even the ORIGINAL version of FF7 and 8 had huge borders in PAL Regions.

Yeah I know same.

Only difference is when I use full pixel, the side borders get a wee bit bigger, and it introduces top/below borders. Normal just has about an inch at each side.

I normally have it on full pixel as that's what works with all the HD content best, shows off the whole picture. I guess that's what overscan is?

Yeah it's a pain I'm going to end up rebuying it off the USA PSN store haha.

This is FFVII US version. Quality sucks, I changed the brightness so you can see the borders. Not a big deal to me and I'm playing it most of the time in the PSP.

eh.. why they cant rerelease FF8 ;<... wanna see Squall and Rinoa maded with smoother polygons :p

FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX remake would be awesome but I don't think is going to happen anytime soon. Maybe the new game Nomura is talking is FFVII but we don't know.

I remember when I got FFVIII. I watched the intro FMV over and over again. One of my favorite intros.

Both of these games shine on the PSP. They look the best that I've seen them.

They didn't receive a res/hd update so I think whatever you get out of the PS3 is the best your going to get.

I keep the res as small as possible to create the best graphics/images.

FMVs in FF8 actually hold up pretty well on the PS3, I think cause it's video and the PS3 does actually upscale video properly.

I'm going to be rebuying FF7 from the USA store though, the 50hz thing ****es me off with it's stupid borders.

FF8 is out on the UK store? It would appear that I am behind the times.

I've vowed to never buy a PAL PS1 game again. That includes Vagrant Story, unfortunately.
