Resolution Issue with my PS3

Recommended Posts

Hello all, since I got my PS3 Slim, I hooked it up to my 1080P Samsung TV. When I'm in the menu, it displays in 1080P. As soon as I start a game it switches to 720P. I know some games only support 720P, but this happens as well with games that do support 1080P! For example: Uncharted 2. I had to play this game in 720P the whole time, I have no clue why either. :/

Is there maybe a setting I have to change so that it plays the games in the 1080P resolution?

Thanks,

Daniel

IIRC Uncharted 2 plays in 720p.

Most games do, only a few upscale to 1080p (MGS4 is the only one I can think of right now), and only a very few run native at 1080p.

Your TV does a good job of upscaling anyway.

But it says on the box of Uncharted 2 that it supports 1080P! So I'm Confused :/

You sure it doesn't say 1080i? Some games will support 1080i for older TVs.

I only rented Uncharted 2 so I can't actually remember what it ran in for me.

edit: I think a lot of games just say that to show they'll run on a 1080p set, Batman for example says 1080p, but I know it runs in 720p.

Yeah. One game I know for sure is 1080p if you want to check it out is Wipeout Pure on the PSN. As others have said I am pretty sure 98% of games are 720p, and Uncharted 2 definitely is.

You can force the PS3 to output games at 1080p by unchecking 720p from the video settings list, but this can have adverse affects in some games (slowdown/lag/tearing). Maybe the games with 1080p on the back will play okay doing this, but if left to choose themselves they're always going to choose native and let your TV upscale.

A decent TV upscaler is always going to be better than a console, especially if we're talking 1080p TVs.

Oh wow. Lol, I didn't realize that 720P was red and the other were white. So I guess Uncharted 2 is 720P. :(

And my PS3 is connected to my TV using gold plated HDMI cables.

Once you start playing through it I'm sure worrying about 720p/1080p will be the least of your worries, it looks great ;)

R u using HDMI cable? to support 1080 you need a HDMI cable.

Yes, read my above post.

Also, After looking at all my games, AC2 is 1080P! its in red. And the game still showed in 720P >,>

As mentioned you can force games to run at 1080 by going into the display settings and unchecking 720, but it can cause issues.

Other recent games that run at 1080p I can think of are Modern Warefare 2 and Pixeljunk Shooter.

You can force it to run at 1080p by disabling the other resolutions in display settings, but trust me, your TV will upscale it a lot better than the PS3 will, so just leave it.

How would you upscale the picture with the TV? I've also got a Samsung 1080p TV that I've just got for my birthday.

Well it does it naturally. If you force the PS3 to run in 1080p it will upscale the 720p content. However the TV will upscale the 720p content to fit the screen (1080p) :)

Well my telly tells me 720 (well, xxxX720) in the corner and 1920x1080 when I'm in 1080p (Modern Warfare 2). Is that normal, upscaled or...what?
