Gamespot: Killzone 2 wins Shooter of the Year award

Recommended Posts

The original Killzone will forever be remembered as the "Halo killer" that wasn't, a game that ultimately collapsed under the weight of its own promise and hype. Clearly, the odds were stacked against its sequel from the start, which makes its victory in this category all the more impressive.

Killzone 2 presents what may be the greatest refinement of the core mechanics that compose a shooter, resulting in one of the most satisfying experiences this genre has to offer. Between the stellar graphics, the fantastic audio design, and the sometimes uncanny AI, Killzone 2 often feels like one of the most accurate depictions of war--an impressive feat considering that at least one other nominee is based on that very concept. While Killzone 2 won't win any awards for originality, the visceral experience the game provides is second to none among shooters: it's exhilarating to dart through the war-torn environment, taking cover wherever possible, while bullets scream by.

Add to this a fantastically deep and compelling multiplayer experience and it's easy to see why Killzone 2 is our shooter of the year. Against all expectations, Killzone 2 has set the standard for future shooters.

I would have picked Killzone 2 or MW2 out of those choices. Killzone 2 was beautiful in basically every way, but the story sucked and was kinda bland. :/ So was MW2's as a matter of fact. :hmmm:

In terms of single-player, KZ2 was outstanding. The story was a bit cliched but the graphics, gameplay, sound, overall artistic "feel" of the game was outstanding.

I just think the MP was a massive pile of steaming monkey ######.

I agree with the SP comment. The story wasn't that great but everything else was well done.

The MP is pretty awesome. Played a lot and loved it and I still play it.

Killzone 2 is the worst "triple a" fps I played this year. Forgetable story, forgetable characters, akeard gameplay, and horrible online. This game is the reason I will not buy MAG because it proved to me how horrible psn really is. I would take a ****ty game like MW2 over this game any day.

The graphics were the only thing going for this game but mixed with bad gameplay and bad controls it really doesn't mean anything. Anyone ever walk up to another character in single player? Your eye level is at everyones torso. I guess the main character is a midget.

I bet Kane and Lynch was a better game than this.

I did quite enjoy it, actually spent a good time online and the singleplayer is a great experience. and when thinking about it, it probably was the best shooter I played this year. That says more about the competition though.

I enjoyed the online play, but I like online games with classes because it lets me not have to be the best at racking up kills, I can help in other ways.

Plus most of you probably never played the DLC, but the new maps they made were incredible (technically).

I think it deserves the award for the amount of pressure it had coming off that E3 trailer, now with a kick ass engine they can focus on ironing out some of the other kinks/polishing up the gameplay.

It could never live up to that E3 hype/pressure, so the basically tried their hardest on the graphics end which might of shifted focus a little from other areas, but gotta give them some credit for that. Try seeing what other 32 player online games look like technically, generally pretty **** or they don't even do 32 players.

Were they planning on releasing a quick follow-up (KZ3) or were they going to wait a 3-4 years and do a kind of end of console life release like GOW2?

KZ3 was announced on Dutch TV (some gaming show I think) but they denied it. Obviously being made, possibly an early 2011 game. Still think they'll take their time with it but coming off that engine won't need to do much.

In fact Guerilla are supposedly showing us an updated build of the engine at GDC next year (Feb I think) - Obviously it's going to be for KZ3, but I don't know if the tech demo showing the engine will just be generic or actually from KZ3.

Exactly what I assumed. That game could possibly surpass UC2 for the amount of polish a game will receive this generation, it is going to look gorgeous.

Depends on the setting. KZ2's color pallette made sense, it was a war on a mining planet. If KZ3 leaves Helghan, yeah, could def be gorgeous.
