Oh yeah baby, finally a site not being scared to award an awesome game GoTY just because it hasn't sold 1million + titles ;)

And lol MW2 didn't even feature.

edit: Fixed video link, sorry :p

I'm confused :/

GOTY isn't actually there and we're expected to vote?

I fixed the video link within minutes of posting, it's 11 minutes long, spends 2/3 minutes showing of contenders then the rest of the time all the editors explaining why they choose what they did as GOTY.

Oh, the video wasn't very clear. I only saw that it played for 2m.

Ds is good but Dragon Age: Origins is so much better.

As above, I think they're just trying to be edgy with that vote.

Gamespot trying to get back some geek credibility  I'm not saying DS isnt' good but it's no where near GOTY material.

You imported it/bought it? How come you never spoke about it in the official thread, like only 3 people on Neowin did :p

For being a fresh air and something different/unique that easily puts it as a potential for one sites opinion of GoTY. Maybe Gamespot were just tired with all the shooters/FPS games.

Dragon Age Origins is like every other Bioware title, extremely well done and polished but the same formula for every RPG like Neverwinter Nights, DS is something different.

Did you ever even complete it?

It won best RPG from Gametrailers as well.

Nope - the lack of pause really ruined it for me.

DS isn't REALLY that different - it's basically The Witcher with an invasive online mode.

DA:O urinates all over it in terms of polish, storyline, accessibility and depth, imo.

Mind you, DS winning GOTY doesn't really offend me - I am interested to see what the DS devs bring to the table next.

It plays nothing like The Witcher :/

From 4 playthroughs I've never once thought this is anything like that game.

How far did you even get?

Definitely think that may be part of it but Gamespot will never earn back its credibility lost after "the scandalous firing". DS does deserve some merit but not a GOTY in my mind. Maybe it was because my two and a half hour play session wasn't past the 20 hour recommended "burn-in" session.

They're both hack-n-slash games with moderate magic use, a focus on timing (Witcher for actual combo's, DS for block/counters), a clear storyline on demons and war-torn worlds.

I think I got as far as 2.1 on DS but it's been months since I played - death penalty/lack of pause seriously limited its appeal.

Not really a great deal into it, just not a game for you then.

But I totally disagree it plays anything like The Witcher and have never once seen anyone make that comparison. I've completed both games by the way.

Nope, my brother in-law did, played it for about an hour, didn't care enough to order it. I didn't say it was bad, just no where near GOTY material. There were several other nominees in that video that were far better games, just Gamespot trying to get some hit count and creditability, and failing.

That's fine but an hours gameplay with a 40+ hour game isn't much of a representation.

It's just Gamespots opinion, there is no definitive GoTY, everyone thinks differently, just nice to see a site that's obviously felt so strongly about such a different game follow their opinion without caring about the audience reaction, it's their GoTY. They even all give their reasons in the video didn't just say "this is Gamespot GoTY". With most games that hold your hand nowadays unless you unlock super hard aimbot AI mode (usually called hardcore), it's a nice change up in variety to our gaming industry to see a game not following the pack be recognized.

It's completely fictional that there is ever a best game, any year.

And trying to get some cred? Hardly, most people who'll see this award will flame the hell out of Gamespot because the games probably sold about 300-400k copies across all regions, it's not that popular a genre and not a well known game. Everyone wants to see Borderlands/MW2/Halo ODST/UC2/AC2/etc win.

But then it doesn't matter what they voted, if it were AC2/UC2/MW2 everyone would just say pay off/following the pack, they vote something different everyone whines just doing it so they aren't accused of being paid off. Pretty lame really, but that's the type of grudges gamers hold, lose/lose situation for GS.
