noroom
Have you guys given this some thought? There's a lot of sites out there that do this. They have a special forum, and posts made in that forum (by people with the appropriate permissions, i.e. newsposters) show up as newsarticles on the front page. This has the neat side-effect that the comments section becomes the forum topic itself, which offers a much better layout and more features than the comments as they are at the moment. Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted December 26, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted December 26, 2009 We have the ability to, but don't use that feature very often. We do often post a link to the forum discussion if deemed needed, but often enough, there is just way too many topics going on at the same time and we don't always see it and skip it. We also write original news and don't link the stories because it usually deals with different information, and commenting would just be confusing. shockz
The news/front end script we use now is more scalable and customizable compared to the forums. Especially administration-wise. I also believe the front page handles the load much better than IPB would. As with every major IPB revision, the site usually requires a large overhaul, having the front page tie into the forums would introduce additional work as well as longer upgrade times. We have an upgrade, Ignition, being worked on that will completely overhaul the front page, and should give you a more enjoyable experience. The_Decryptor Veteran Posted December 26, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 26, 2009 Yeah, IPB really can't handle the load, while the front page software can handle it without breaking a sweat. I would love for it to happen, but it's just not possible at the moment.
PreKe
It would be great to be able to subscribe to new posts and get notifications for replies for front page posts... I mean, if it can't be merged with the forum.
DaveLegg Developer Posted December 26, 2009 Developer Share Posted December 26, 2009 It would be great to be able to subscribe to new posts and get notifications for replies for front page posts... I mean, if it can't be merged with the forum. We are considering adding that ability, we have already added extra notifications for staff, such as informing news posters by email if a problem is found in their article, allowing them to correct it much faster than before. noroom
It would be great to be able to subscribe to new posts and get notifications for replies for front page posts... I mean, if it can't be merged with the forum. That's the thing, it's really hard keeping track of the comments I make on newsposts, whereas the forum offers great tools to do just that.
