When playing MW2 on my PS3 mine says it is Moderate and I never put any mind to it being that I am not too certain as to what that means.

It means that you are only able to connect to other people who have moderate or open connections.

We need to know more about your connection. Do you have a modem and a router, or just possibly a modem? How does your 360 connect to Xbox live?

its a modem and a wireless router. i have mine hooked up with a ethernet cable.

What brand of wireless router and what brand of a modem?

Yes normally I also have an open but for some reason it went strict yesterday! I'm still trying to troubleshoot it.

The NAT type that you should be aiming for to have the best functionality in Multiplayer games is "Open" although personally I've had games work perfectly fine in "Moderate" and "Strict" modes.

This is the Xbox 360 official page on this - Xbox 360 - Your NAT type is Strict or Moderate

Games will work fine no matter the NAT. If you have a strict/moderate NAT, games may take substantially longer to find.

i have time warner cable and thats the router they gavve me.

Time Warner generally does't supply a router, on a Cable Modem, typically a Motorola Surfboard. They may off different packages in different markets, but more details required.

I've seen that before, typically the UPNP daemon (which listens for the UPNP requests to map ports automtically) seems to crash on some routers usually rebooting the router fixes that problem.

Are you able to log in to your modem and/or know how?

I fixed the issue by just placing my 360 in the modem's DMZ.

You don't need it open, it just means that you won't be able to host a game and you will always connect to something else..... Its really not needing to be open, trust me.

Worst option everrrrrrr.... I would not recommend doing this.

incorrect it should not take any longer to find a game, games are broadcasted and you connect to this server to look for the broadcasted/hosted games, then after that it makes a connection, and NAT translate this connection from local to public IP and ports.

So in the end its just means no one can connect to you because NAT does not know where to forward this information.

Moderate would most likely be upnp and still may or may not work when hosting games depending if your computer and router talk correctly to open up this port.

open will obviously let you host games and do everything else.

Umm, yea he doesn't have to have it open, but why would you openly suggest some one not bother? He will never be able to host a game or join with other people (maybe friends for example) if they have a moderate or strict NAT, that's kind of a deal breaker...

I challenge you to test that statement on a game like MW2. If you have a strict NAT it can take 5+ minutes to get into a game at times where open connections get into games in seconds. Not only that but having a strict NAT can make getting into games with friends (who have open connections) even extremely difficult.

I'm glad you shared the technical aspect behind a NAT, but when you actually play with a strict NAT it is quite an unpleasant experience.

I play with strict NAT I have no issues finding or connecting to games what-so-ever... Its exactly the same if I open it up as well....... the technically aspect is the only aspect, otherwise it would go against all logic. Your computer/device is sending out and opening a connection on the router (well the router is opening a connection between the source and destination IP and port) it keeps this open, only if the server sends something on a different port or someone else try's to connect without a forward would it cause an issue...... But its not an issue unless you are hosting the game.

And BTW I didn't say don't open it.... sure do it if you want.... but its not needed, and he hasn't said he is having any types of issues, otherwise just forward the ports to your xbox.

Well obviously I have to go by your word here, but in my experience over two consoles (not computers), a strict NAT has always caused problems. If none of your friends have strict that is great, then you can all join up fine. If even one has anything less than open, well good luck.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.
