Take-Two Frustrated By GTA Expansion Sales

Recommended Posts

They never released them and probably never will.

Michael Patcher estimated around 1 million.

And of course they'd do DLC again, it makes money, but when you only release it on one platform out of three logic shows you you're only making "1/3rd" of your potential.

But it's not just that to blame, Take Two did draw out GTA4, and the length of it put many off completing it and psychologically people see DLC as an extension they'd need to have completed the game for.

Interesting, but by the sounds of it, T2 won't be doing DLC on such a large scale again even if something does get released to both consoles. I don't necessarily blake T2 because if they didn't make GTAIV as large as they did, people would have gone nuts. I personally don't know what the problem is, I thought the size was near perfect.

My problem is, I just think it is going to be really hard to push this kind of DLC in the future. I could never justify spending $20 on something I'll go through once (maybe twice). On the other hand, I think multiplayer map DLC that segregates the online community is also the wrong way to go. I better stop before I get started on my DLC complaints...:p

I lost interest in GTA IV before I even finished all the original content. Didn't see a need to buy the expansions so I could take more virtual family members out to dinner and then drive them home. *yawn*

online multiplayer just plain sucked.

I thought it was great on the Xbox, with the deathmatches and races.....plus all those other modes.

I loved GTA 4, my second favourite after Vice City. I didn't find San Andreas much fun at all, **** would I wanna go to a gym in a video game.

I completed LATD, but haven't got round to playing TBOGT much :pinch:

I loved it, but I haven't even finished the story. I always get side tracked.

Same here. As I see it, the double-edged sword for all "open world"-style games is the expansive, and time consuming main gameplay, whether it be good or not. In the end it usually comes down to 2 basic scenarios:

Either

(a) The player finishes the game &/or DLC(s), and moves onto the next genre/open-world game/gaming platform, etc., or what have you, and (generally) never picks it up again.

or

(b) The player doesn't finish the game &/or DLC(s), usually being sidetracked by any combination of millions of personal/professional reasons, & eventually the player moves on like the scenario (a) player.

I loved Vice City when it came out, I played it for ages. I spent about a day playing San Andreas. IV was better than San Andreas but it was the same story I had got bored of long before. I got tired of having to go and pick people up, check the Internet and make phone calls as it all felt so predictable, they should have just used an in game movie, at least then I wouldn't have to click all the stupid buttons to get the same preset response.

I think they need to dump all the gimmicks. Give me a well controlled character and a UI that makes me think, then I will chase them all over the city.

"Both we and [Xbox-maker] Microsoft believe there was a big market for GTA IV episodic content," company CEO Ben Feder said during a call with investors on Thursday.

Are game companies still assuming what the end users want, I thought they stopped doing this, guess not. We had a lot of this done in the 1980s & 1990s, companies for example didn't want to bring RPGs to North America, because they assumed there was no market over here for them, so we lost a lot of good games because of it.

I really don't think that making the DLC exclusive to Xbox has anything to do with lousy sales. I just think that people really don't care any more about GTA as much as they did when GTA IV came out, or even compared to the PS2 days.

If people still cared about GTA then Chinatown wars would have done so much better than it did.

Uh did you see GTA4 sales? Very good.

GTA Chinatown wars is a step back to old school, and to boot it was released on two platforms where piracy is easier than taking a leak in the toilet - The hardcore the portable game was targeted to probably largely pirated it.

A full scale GTA experience is very different to a portable one, if I'm honest GTA is not really a game I care about playing on a portable, it's something I like to sink hours into.

Well the guy was disappointed because the game didn't have as many sales as he expected. Obviously they realize that it would have sold more if it had been avaliable on more platforms. They took the fact that it was only avaliable on the 360 before they made their forecast but he was still disappointed.

But yeah I'm not really surprised I think people want a new city not same old...

Hey Take-Two! Want 30$ from me? Release both Episodes on Steam for that price. I wouldn't even wait for the next Holiday-Sale....

Yeah, I was a little bored at the end of GTA4 but it's been a while and the expansions are afaik more streamlined.

I think the core problem is that these expansions were too expensive to be DLC. I feel DLC should cost $10, tops.

they are huge expansions though, all reviews point to them being worth the $20. Would it have sold more if it was released on the ps3, without a doubt. However I think each version would have still sold more on the 360 so if the 360 is low then the ps3 would have been just as low. I think the main problem is the price like you said. Although I feel they would be worth it, me personally I was just swamped with other stuff ATM and money was tight. It's hard to justify spending $40 on an "old" game when i can buy a new game with a whole new experience for the same price.

Meh GTA 4... I can't really say why but I loved GTA 3 waay more, 4 bored me VERY fast. :/

I don't see why you think that. GTA4 is basically GTA3, but better... Maybe you mean GTA3 was more impressive for it's time, but why you'd say, now, that you'd rather play GTA3 than 4, is beyond me.

I thoroughly enjoyed GTA4 and both the episodes.

SAME!!! GTA3 had a fun vibe to it and was a much brighter game, despite 4's more realistic graphics I distinctly found it less fun, dark and yeah put the controller down myself at about the half way mark.

They're missing a lot of the sandbox elements they have built upon in the previous games.

For people like me who enjoy GTA for the sandbox rather than the story, this was a huge let down.

Couple that with the added realism, things just weren't fun anymore and the possibilities became limited.

Port the PS2 trilogy, and make DLC. Watch each one outsell GTA4.

Maybe you mean GTA3 was more impressive for it's time, but why you'd say, now, that you'd rather play GTA3 than 4, is beyond me.

That's easy. GTA4 is a crime sim, whereas GTA3 is a crime game. GTA3 is about fun, whereas GTA4 is about pseudo-realism. GTA 3 has tanks. Whilst that at first may seem like a minor point, it represents the difference between the last gen GTAs and this gen's GTAs.

For me the problem with the DLC was that GTA4 itself was a fairly average game and so I had no interest in getting any of the additional content or even looking at it. The game IMHO lacked drive or something, just wasn't as fun as Vice City so I never finished it not had any reason as such to look into the DLC.

SA sort of suffered the same problem where I think Rockstar could cut back the length of the campaign a bit and just fill it with more substance/variety/interactivity. They along with most if not all other developers haven't really gotten past the problem that the city feels rather static and lifeless with some randomly generated traffic thrown in and a bar every few KM's you can visit. It'd be good if they could find a way to make it feel more real. As it is, after the Nth shootout or the Nth car chase (and I hated how the cars controlled this time) I think I found it all very repetitive.

GTA SA was the best as a overall, coz it was really funny

i played GTA SA atleast 10times & i didnt have to force myself to play it till end, actually i wished it had a bit longer story line.

the dialogues are really funny, the characters are funny, & when you crash a ped car onto a cop car, the cops chase that ped car. lol. & theres this random cop chasing random gangster ped cars...

& after you finish the storyline missions, the game doesnt stall there, then we can go on recruit gangsters as body guards & taking over territories, taxi missions...

but GTA4 got boring just after 5-6 missions, reminded me a lot of FarCry2. - start a mission- drive to another island - kill someone - make a call.

GTA4 is not as funny as GTA SA, i think R* got over involved in making GTA4.

the Storyline was average, not too many things to do in map either.

the parts i liked was the realistic looking map gfx., animation, physics, vehicle physics, making use of taxi, functional cell phone...

whenever i get time, i prefer to play GTA SA :D, makes me laugh, a lot

Am i the only person that loved GTA4 and i mean A LOT, ive played and finished it about 5-6 times now. Dying for them to release both DLC on PC.

I didn't like it as much as I liked the PS2 series, but it still is one of my favorites, and I've finished it 3 times now. Only thing I wish they would have included in the PS3 version was custom radio station, I got tired of the same songs. I'll probably play it again once they get close to GTA5 release, or if PS3 gets the Episodes DLC.

Just like Osiris and Michael1406 said, I found GTA 3 waaay more fun.... GTA 4 tried to be realistic but that killed half of the stuff that made me enjoy GTA 3...

The crime sim vs. crime game comment from Michael really put it nicely into words.

I don't say GTA 4 is a bad game all over it's just not a game for me :p
