HolyOne
Well, I got a PS3 for Christmas (am loving it so far, and it also gives me an excuse to start actively posting here on Neowin) but I'm having a little problem. I purchased an Ethernet cable, and connected my modem to my PS3. Now, the problem is the Internet doesn't work on the PS3. If I hop onto the Browser, it can not display the web page. And if I go into Network Settings and perform the Connection Test or whatever, it times out while trying to obtain the IP. Any ideas? Ridlas
Have DHCP enabled?
dragon2611
What Kind of modem Are you using a router or is it direct into the Modem? Does your provider tie your internet access to a Specific device?, I know some require you to register the MAC of your computers Ethernet card. HolyOne
Have DHCP enabled? http://www.ehow.com/how_5072525_enable-dhcp-windows-xp.html I googled that link, and if its correct, then I already have DHCP enabled as both of the items are checked already. What Kind of modemAre you using a router or is it direct into the Modem? Does your provider tie your internet access to a Specific device?, I know some require you to register the MAC of your computers Ethernet card. My Internet Provider is Cox Communications, and it is a modem, no router involved. The modem says: Motorola SB5101 SURFboard Cable Modem As for the MAC question, I have no idea. EDIT: http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Co...em-SB5101-US-EN ^ That is my modem.
Ridlas
According to that site, your modem only has one ethernet slot. How exactly is your PS3 connected to it?
Phemo
Have you power cycled the modem after plugging it into the PS3? I know with our cable modems in the UK we have to power cycle the modem whenever it gets plugged into any other device otherwise it won't work. EddieF
Unplug the modem and PS3. Plug the modem back in after a few seconds and then try the PS3 again. A lot of ISPs tie the modem to a device.

You are correct, there is only one Ethernet slot, and that is the slot my PS3 is currently connected to. Have you power cycled the modem after plugging it into the PS3? Power cycle.. :| Does that mean turning it off and then on lol? Unplug the modem and PS3. Plug the modem back in after a few seconds and then try the PS3 again. A lot of ISPs tie the modem to a device. Will give it a go.
x9248
Definitely gotta power cycle. I would leave it unplugged for at least 2 minutes, then plug the power back in. I have Time Warner tho, maybe yours won't take as long.
Bhav
Power cycle.. :| Does that mean turning it off and then on lol? Yep! (But not instantly...you should wait a few mins before turning it back on)
HolyOne
Here's an update: I simply disconnected the modem and plugged it back in after a few seconds, and the modem itself established a connection. However, the PS3's connection test still failed, and this time the Internet on the Computer stopped working as well. A little tray notification appeared saying "Limited Connection" or something along those lines. After I turned off the PS3 and restarted the modem again the "limited connection" disappeared. Will try the more thorough power cycle next.
x9248
Wait... how do you have internet on your PC while hooked up to your PS3? So you do have a router?
HolyOne
Wait... how do you have internet on your PC while hooked up to your PS3? So you do have a router? By router, I'm assuming you mean something like a wireless router like those Linksys, Netgear, etc. I do not. All I have is that modem with one Ethernet port open. My PC gets it's internet from that modem, and I assumed because of the ethernet port so could my PS3.
Fish
Your modem will always connect to your ISP, but the pint being made here is that your ISP then "ties" your modem to one particular device (your PC). In order to get your PS3 to work, you will need to power-down your modem, plug the PS3 into it, then power-up the modem again. This will let your ISP tie your modem to the PS3; hopefully giving you internet access. Unfortunately you will have to repeat this process every time you want to switch between the PS3 and PC, unless you buy a router (which would make things much simpler). A basic router should be fairly cheap thesedays, infact there was a online store in the UK selling them for ?12.50 at one point.
