Thinking of buying a PS3

Recommended Posts

With the price of $299 today it's really not a big deal to purchase one specially when you get a blue ray player with it.

I have few questions about it:

1. Does it read divx files, so i can watch movies on it? If so does it read it from a CD i burn or do i have to put in on the hard drive if it's even possible.

2. Is it possible to download games from the internet and play them on the PS3?

3. Is it possible to change hard drives after i purchase it? And can i do it at home?

4. Does it come with the HDMI cable or do i need to purchase one?

That's it for now i think :)

Thanks

1. Yes. Yes. Yes and yes.

2. Yes. It's called Playstation Network. Currently, you cannot install 'cracked' games like the crapbox 360 however.

3. Yes. and yes. It uses a notebook style 2.5 inch SATA HD.

4. Sometimes it comes with one, sometimes it dont. If it dont, buy one, and buy the cheapest one, not a $100+ one.

For question 1, you don't even have to put the movie on disc or harddrive. You can stream movies directly from your computer/network. :)

Thanks alot for the fast answer.

Is about the cable, is there any way to know if it has a cable or not? Or there is no way of knowing?

It has a wireless connection?

Yes it has wireless, and bluetooth as well for the slim model I think.

I guess check the side of the box, it should say what is included. Like I said thou, if it dont come with a HDMI, you can buy a el-cheapo for like$5-$10. They do the exact same job as the ones that sell for $100+

Thanks for the help.

I dont think i would have spend $100 on the cable anyway, it's 1/3 of PS3 cost!

BTW:

I know it connects to the internet, can i play against other players on the net?

Let me get this straight, you want to buy a PS3, but don't even know the most basic of details about its features?? Wouldn't a quick trip to Sony's web site have been a good idea? Pretty much all of the questions you asked could have been answered by looking there, or hell, even the Wikipedia article about the PS3!!

By the way, I have yet to see a PS3 that included the HDMI cable, that is always a seperate purchase.

Yes, via Playstation Network.

Thanks again.

Well, what's wrong with using the forum for those questions?! I thought that the forum is here just for that, to get help.

There's nothing wrong with it, I just found it odd that you were considering buying a $300 game console without even knowing the most basic of details about its features. Sorry if I came across as being harsh.

I just wanted to correct this misinformed person.

#2 Crap box 360? Wow I guess crap sells better than the overpriced Sony sh*t.

#4 NO IT DOESN'T COME WITH AN HDMI. It only comes with component cables. Maybe if you get a bundle deal at Costco or BJ's. But it doesn't come in the PS3 box.

Bottom line, ask yourself why do you need the PS3. If it's for watching AVI movies, then the Xbox 360 and PS3 will do that without a problem. But if it is for games, take a look at the exclusive games being offered by each company and see which one you think you will like better.

For me, I have a 360. I bought the 360 because I like there exclusive games and the media streaming as well as the Netflix streaming service. I also bought a Sony Blu-ray for under $100 on black Friday so I have the best of both worlds IMO.

The PS3 codec support is far better than 360's. Also PS3 comes with composite, not component, he will need to buy a HDMI lead.

If I ever have a codec issue with a video, its normally the audio track, but thats quickly fixed if you know what you're doing.

the 360 is nice if you dont mind buying 2 or 3 of them a year to keep playing.

It's o.k, you are not being hursh. I'm considering buying it and that's why i'm asking all the questions. Up until now i didnt think that i need something like this but now i'm going to spend more time at home so i thought it would be nice to have something like this. And $300 is not that much month IMO.

I didnt even think of buying the 360. I have few friends that were very disappointed with it and told me not to even think about buying it. On the other hand i have friends with PS3 that loving every minute they use it.

1.yes

4. Buy a cheap HDMI cable which costs about 3 or 4 dollars and it will do evertything you need.

My Ps3 work perfectly and i love it. I am sure you will love it too.

Only thing I want to clarify for you is question 2, legally you can download games off of the PSN store, even PS1 classics and some full retail PS3 games, but no to piracy if that's what you mean.

And NO PS3 has ever come with an HDMI cable, need to pick one up, monoprice is good choice for online, in a shop just buy the cheapest you can get they all do the same thing.

Other questions everyone's already answered.

Not usually no, but there are a few games that are Network exclusive, as in you can't buy them on a disc.

O.k, another question regarding this..... If i buy a game i guess i download it to the HD. If i delete the game from the HD can i download it again without paying again?

And another question that comes to my mind, if i buy the 120GB PS3 and change the HD to something bigger will it hurd the operating menu of the PS3 or something? Or it's on a different memory?!

The OS is not installed on the hard drive, however the PS3 will error if you boot without it.

All PSN purchases can be redownloaded as often as you like onto activated machines. You have 5 activations.

I heard with slims they cut down the bios size to 32mb (actual PS3 OS is still nowhere near that low) and part of the firmware does actually install to the drive. Need to research that though.

They actually started storing part of the OS on the hard drive on some models (the 40GB for sure, not sure about others) around version 2.5 or so of the OS. Its still a fairly easy procedure to swap out to a larger hard drive though, and it is well documented on the PS3 web site.

What's an activation? The first time i buy it i need to activate it i guess. Why would i need to activate it again?

And about the HD, is it just possible to add another passport HD with a USB connection?

You need to activate so you can redownload titles, but I think it tells you when you set it up anyway.
