nokiaxion
Hey A friend just got a PS3 and Im wondering, since he is a video game freak, if PS3 games could be backed up to BR-Rs or the PS3's HDD and be played off these 2 medias. Thanks :)
Richard Hammond
Nope and if they havent done by now they probably wont. Also this is against Neowin rules so id be careful.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 28, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted December 28, 2009 System OS is locked down like a fortress and the only reason the 360 got hacked was through DVD firmware which they've now seemingly found a way to detect. Although software modding is coming through on the 360 now, it's on pre-NXE updated consoles, and again you'll be banned on Live for it. Console pirates are just going to start to have to like living the lives of actually buying stuff :p
nokiaxion
Nope and if they havent done by now they probably wont. Also this is against Neowin rules so id be careful. The GC was able to run backups when the current generation consoles were announced or released (dont remember). So it may take a while, but what can be done by man can also be undone. etempest
Not at this time, I think what makes the PS3 harder to hack is Sony is constantly changing the OS, sometimes fundamentally, making it a bit of a moving target.
NiallG
Although software modding is coming through on the 360 now, it's on pre-NXE updated consoles Actually the JTAG exploit requires soldering so its still all hardware based :p Apparently the sole person who hacked the 3GS is now working on the PS3, dunno how successful that will be though; http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 28, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted December 28, 2009 He just wants to run backups. He is not a pirate :) Auch that excuse is worse than telling your GF she actually gave you a good BJ when she was blitzed drunk and practically biting your head off. Blu Ray discs are like tanks, don't scratch easily and unless you store your discs in your dogs bed I doubt you've got anything to worry about. Never once in my life have I ever got any game disc/catridge into a state of not working. No I don't own kids, but I've had kids use my stuff, I just take good care of it and supervise well. Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted December 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 28, 2009 Honestly i do not see why you would want to do this other than just being Cheap. I understand that the games are a bit pricey however they are also more expensive to make now.
HawkMan
Not at this time, I think what makes the PS3 harder to hack is Sony is constantly changing the OS, sometimes fundamentally, making it a bit of a moving target. Not really, that wouldn't have anything to do with the ability to hack the system. it could affect exploits if titles required the latest OS version and the exploit was in the OS but that's about it. that's the thign with the 360 as well, the console hasn't been hacked. and sony learnt from MS mistake. the copy protection in both consoles is pretty much rock solid. MS just did a mistake, they forgot to include the DVD drive within the security barrier of the copy protection. basically they build a river fortress city, and left the custom house for the city outside of the city/fortress walls. Heck the original xbox itself was also only cracked via exploits. I remember someone ran a boinc like network to crack the keys for it so they could make real keys for the disks, never really panned out.
Livin in a box
PS2 backups can be played on launch PS3's with the emotion engine. But that's about it.

Coldgunner
PS2 backups can be played on launch PS3's with the emotion engine. But that's about it. IIRC pretty much the old disc swap technique, I read about it once and it practically requires running your ps3 AND blu ray drive without covers. And if truly want to be thrifty you can shop the used game racks. Indeed, if you have the disposable income for a console, you can buy games too. BigBoobLover
The GC was able to run backups when the current generation consoles were announced or released (dont remember). How does that relate to the PS3? The fact is that if people haven't been able to make the PS3 run backup copies yet, they probably never will be. It only took a short time for the Gamecube to be hacked, same with the Wii and both models of Xbox. Even the PS2 was relatively easy. The PS3 has been out for over 3 years now, and people are no closer to hacking it to play backups than they were on release day.

You actually only need the Swap Magic 3.6 disc and a spare USB pendrive/HDD and it ran just perfect. But that was about as far as they took that approach. Isn't the security of the PS3 ran from one of the cores of the Cell CPU? There is NO way he's gonna reverse engineer the cell processor, it's almost impossible. Never once in my life have I ever got any game disc/catridge into a state of not working. No I don't own kids, but I've had kids use my stuff, I just take good care of it and supervise well. I dont understand WHY you think it is a excuse. It is the real reason, he likes to run backups. Hell, I dont even know why he does it. But I dont care. I see (he had a PS2) a DVD spine with all PS2 backups and the boxed copies of the original games in the shelves. Its his problem and I asked the possibility if it could be done. I did not ask for a torrent to a game or anything. People are yelling "guilty" before there is even proof of something. How does that relate to the PS3? It relates to that lets say (I dont know the years right now and this is only a example) but the GC, Xbox and PS2 was released in 2000. The Xbox and the PS2 could run backups in 2001. Then the Xbox 360 and the PS3 were released in late 2003. Well in early 2003, the GC could run backups. This is all a EXAMPLE but it is to show how "that" is related to the PS3. Everyone needs to fix their panties. I asked if the PS3 can run backups. Nothing else.
