Sethos
So, a few days ago I stumbled upon this little gem which made me get the Steam holiday deal and to my surprise, it's fantastic. Never before have I seen a game that actually requires teamwork to get you anywhere and voice commutation is such a core element - 99% of games today promote teamwork but really, any player with a bit of skill can go lone ranger and rake in a ton of kills. I mostly stick to the UKWF Insurgency server under the nick Sethos88. In case someone isn't familiar with the modification, here's the website: http://www.realitymod.com/ It's certainly a breath of fresh air to Battlefield 2 and anyone who enjoys teamwork will love this, of course you also need to enjoy realism ... I mean, realism by every measure of that word but running around as a Taliban fighter planting IEDs for American forces to run over is surprisingly fun and equally it's fun to run around with a squad cleaning out insurgent villages ... Such a brilliant mod. Oh and the sounds, they are just amazing - They will easily compete with and top any AAA war title today. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted December 31, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 31, 2009 I'm familiar with this mod but I never tried it. It's a 1.77 GB download + additional files so this better be worth it. :p
Sethos
Well I think it is and look at the bright side, it's free :p Though, it requires a bit of fiddling to get it working with the Steam copy, in case you have that. EDIT: For BF2 Steam users looking to try this; http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f26-pr-bug...tml#post1158450 & http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f26-pr-bug...tml#post1158526
Huleboeren
I played it alot from 0.2 to 0.5 I think - but it got out of hand It became too realistic compared to what the insanely hardcoded BF2 engine allows You have weaponsway but you cant actually see the weapon sway so you have to imagine it itself - like 90% of the other features in the mod :(
That Guy Veteran Posted December 31, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 31, 2009 I've seen it and been tempted by it, but does it add a load of crappy textures?

Sethos
Actually, I'd like to revise my opinion a bit on this modification after a few games today. Yes, the developers has put a lot of work into it and paid a lot of attention to the finer details. The main problem is, there's some ( important ) aspects to the game that's just too much and the community behind the game is also a bit over the top. Now, normally I love realism as some may know - It's where my heart lies when it comes to gaming but this mod takes things a bit too far ... Far enough to actually go beyond realism to a realm of, well, not-realism. They claim to have realistic bullet physics which they have, sort of but as Huleboeren mentioned they just gone way beyond what the engine is capable of. The times where I've been on my belly somewhere, not moving a muscle and fired single-shots with a nice pause between them and seen the shots go in the most insane directions are numerous. The bullet physics have absolutely no correlation between what the hell your weapon is doing and how the bullets are flying. Normally, a soldier in the prone position will be able to fire at a target and get a very nice collection of hits on a target, not in this game, the bullets will have a cone-spread of at least a meter or more around the target despite being in the prone position and being careful with the shots and this is at a distance of 5-10 meters. Now, this is incredibly annoying in a first person shooter when you feel that your weapon isn't deadly but just a stick that makes some noise. The teamwork I was talking about isn't just a big force, it's being shoved down your throat with a shovel - You will be teamkilled, kicked, banned and god knows what if you aren't doing exactly what the team-leader says, which by the way is some random 15 year old from Germany who doesn't have a grain of tactical sense in the first place or some random 30-something year old who will constantly get you in situations where the team dies again and again. It's a community filled with military people, ex-military and wannabe-military and they will obliterate you if you dare to say anything negative about the game and they will defend the physics and all the developers choices to their death. It's not a very pleasurable experience to be honest. So honestly, unless you are a military buff beyond what's sane and love to play a game that has been artificially pumped up to a size the engine is unable to handle and it's basically seeping liquid out of every orifice with broken aspects - This modification is for you. It did win MOTY which definitely can't be because of gameplay, probably because of what they managed to extract from the ageing engine ... Oh and the helicopter physics are a joke - You can't even play the game with a flightstick unless you enjoy completely broken controls. The game is tricky, it can lure you into a false sense of "Oh this is fantastic" which is what I saw when I created the thread but once you see the gritty, real side of the game it's not a pretty sight. So here's my mini-review score: 6/10 - Avoid.

Sethos
All I asked was whether it added any, didn't say it did :p And I answered - I said I haven't seen any "Crappy textures" thus, they have most likely not added any, which was your question. That Guy Veteran Posted January 1, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 1, 2010 What I meant was: I wasn't implying it had them, just wanted to know if it did. I've seen a lot of cheap tacky mods before that do that's all.
Sethos
Then be more specific, the mod is a complete overhaul in the sense that it adds new game-modes, vehicles, weapons, sounds and physics but the textures besides the aforementioned objects are basically Battlefield 2 textures - I mean, in how many ways can you texture a broken stone wall, streets, curbs etc. I still suggest people try the mod for themselves but be careful, it's slap-in-the-face hardcore. It's slightly better then vanilla bf2 in the content and gameplay as a whole. The focus or intention and quality of things has severely been snuffed out though unfortunately as bf2 engine is dated and has far too many limitations to replicate a "reality" experience. I played it for a while but quickly got sick of it as a whole with multiplayer quickly.
That Guy Veteran Posted January 1, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 1, 2010 Ah well fair enough, I just had horrible memories of trying "new texture packs" for oblivion which made the game fugly :p If it's as you say that's fine.
