Bawx
I have a Powerbook G4, everyone is able to connect to the internet around me while I am not. Is there a way to test if it's not working properly? I know nothing about fixing a Mac. What is this little metal knob on the left side of the laptop? It pushes in and comes out. Bawx
The routers that I'm trying to connect to? They're fine. I'm thinking the wireless card in the Mac is screwy? Or something. It won't connect, everyones fine. I don't even know where to start to diagnose it.
Nightkrawler
what security and channel is the router/wireless set to and what os version are you running? Maybe the router is set to 802.11g or n only and your card doesn't support it (If it is an airport extreme it should) or MAC filtering is on. Bawx
I'm not sure. It's controlled by the maintenance guy. I have OSX 10.3.

HoochieMamma
Go to the network section in system preferences and make sure the wireless adapter is showing there and not set to a manual IP address or anything like that.

Bawx
"There was an error joining the AirPort network luckyd" is that what it says when it can't get a good signal or is that something more?
emmx
Are you using DHCP or are you assigning manual addressing? If you're assigning IP's manually, check to make sure your G4 machine is on the correct subnet.
Bawx
using DHCP is it easy or common for G4 wireless cards to stop working? seems odd.
Bawx
I screwed around with the ethernet/wired connection an now that won't work. What's the default settings for that? The inet works on the other mac just fine. Dont know what I clicked.
Bawx
Okay the ethernet works, but this wireless REFUSES to work. When I go manually set it up for this wireless connection, now it says incorrect password. But it's perfect. Also, my boss has the same exact G4 that won't connect either. So, that helps a bit. Could it be that the Airport card in them is just too old? Or something with the wireless signal and the card just isn't compatible?

It's probably a combination of the way the wireless is setup and a function that the G4's wireless card doesn't support. Did it work before? Did something in the router system change? It's very likely that the PowerBook's AirPort card (is it one of the titanium ones?) can't handle whatever encryption you're running on the network (probably WPA2). You might have to bring down your level of security (to, say, WEP) to connect the machine to it.
