Yeah it's quieter, of course if your rooms as silent as being locked in a white room you still hear it but the fan drone noise is different it blends in more with the environment, doesn't sound as mechanical as my 40GB. Only thing that's noisier is the BR drive, but that's just on ejecting/inserting discs.
cashman Veteran Posted December 31, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 31, 2009 I agree. Couldn't live without my 5.1 system, even though it was only cheap (?160, was about to be discontinued) they sound great, have 2 optical inputs and everything else I need. DTS and Dolby Digital so it's great for movies too. I bought it 3 years ago, but I still wouldn't upgrade. If you can buy on ebay I'd recommend them. Logitech Z-5400. You can get the Z-5450 that have two rear wireless speakers. P.S. Love being able to hear people sneaking up behind me in COD and knowing exactly where they are. ahhell
If you really want to test your home theatre system, throw in a copy of Cloverfield on Blu-ray. The opening title sequence will destroy your house at high volume. I watched it in my Harmon Kardon system a moderate volume and I had dust coming down from my drop ceiling. My cat wasn't to impressed either. LOL

Especially if you can take advantage of it's PCM (HD audio).

hjf288
I have plenty of space, but a wooden laminate floor gives me no cable routing options.I wait in hope of wireless, battery powered 5.1 systems! Logitech do a system similar to the Z-5500s but with "Wireless" rear speakers - you gotta plug em in though :/ might be more convenient though

Livin in a box
I've got a Sony one and it's great- I don't use it anymore because I've moved my PS3, but the subwoofer makes a huge difference.
Joel
Well I don't think you can get DTS (5.1) over composite, only optical/HDMI. And over digital coax. Wouldn't it be 2.1 and, you probably know, composite will have all 5-6 speakers working but of course it's not true surround. 2.1 would mean that there was a distinct channel for the sub, which there is not over the classic red/white L/R cabling. StealMySoda
I have the z-5500, haven't quite got around to putting the rear speakers in the rear yet. My gf doesn't want speaker stands plonked in the middle of the living. It took enough convincing to make her let me get some trunking so I could the wires.
