Flash is pretty much ubiquitous and works well enough. Most people don't see the need for what is basically another proprietary Flash clone. I don't want to have both installed, but if it forces Adobe to actually make Flash work better, then I think it's a good thing MS are doing. Except that, they're pretty much dead wrong on it, Silverlight is open, thus we have moonlight (though with anything open source, it's behind where silverlight is atm). And at this point, looking at what silverlight 4 beta has added feature wise, it's way past being comparible to Flash. Because of silverlight, adobe kneejerked and we got Adobe AIR now, that's a more fair comparison. Regardless, Flash is like the black death on the internet, I'd rather it and Java both be gone. Except that, you're pretty much dead wrong. Yes, we have an open source clone of Silverlight, but there are also many open source clones of Flash, the most advanced probably being Gnash. And yes, of course it, as well as Moonlight, are behind their closed-source counterparts as far as features and performance, because the originals are CLOSED-SOURCE. Microsoft, just like Adobe, do NOT give out the source code for Silverlight. However, just like Adobe, they provide SDKs and development tools. And of course it's way past Flash at this point because Microsoft are actively developing it and adding features in a bid to displace Flash. Thus Adobe is forced to keep actually improving Flash in order to maintain their dominance in this area. As far as AIR - it's Flash-based and runs Flash applications - it's essentially just an extension of Flash allowing Flash apps to run outside the browser. Silverlight just includes this functionality in the box as part of the same package. However, having said that, I'd have to agree with you that I'd like to see Flash/Silverlight go away. Their only real use anymore as far as I'm concerned is for playing web video, and with HTML 5 going the way it is, we soon won't need them for that either. At that point, they'll just be an annoyance.

I'm not dead wrong about anything, Silverlight is open in the sense that it's fully documented and parts of it are shared under MS's Public License which does share source code for things. The Mono team, through the deal with Novel and MS have access to the silverlight base code lib APIs and other parts which the public can't get but that's hardly a problem per say. As for flash and AIR or w/e, I don't care for them and so on. On that note though, saying silverlight is just for playing video, though that may be what you only look at/care for, is pretty off. With all the added features to SL4, it's gone way past just video distro, hell, SL3 had already gone way past that point. HTML5 is all well and good, but we're not talking just <video> here.
