Bare 360 Elite vs. bare 360 Arcade - which one?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys.

Soon I'm going to buy a bare Xbox 360 (just the console, no HDD which I already have, no controllers, got those already, etc... because I already got a 360).

Apart from the optical aspect the elite being black, are there any differences?

I don't care alot about black, to be honest, I favor white, but I once read, that the Elite has some technical differences to the Arcade because it's built a bit more stable to avoid RODs.

My question is:

Is that true or/and are there any other differences?

Thanks a lot guys!

If you are going to buy a used Elite that has no HDD or controllers there is no point, aside from the elites guaranteeing the newest version of the hardware there is nothing different, Elite is a package that includes the extras you are opting to not purchase

If its a used elite then it won't guarantee the latest hardware I believe. I think the elites predate the Jasper and some would be Falcons right?

Anyway I'd go the arcade...easier to add a matching HDD down the road and IMHO they look nicer. Newer arcades also came with a bit of memory built into the board, 256 or 512Megs or something to allow them to install NXE. Unsure whether that memory has found its way into the other models.

Anyway, the console should have the manufacture date on it on the back so have a look at that. Anything released in the past half year or so should be fine.

Technically, there's only one difference - the (newest) Arcade has 512MB of onboard memory.

Aside from that, just try to ensure you get one with a Jasper chipset (the newest one).

I stand corrected, I did not know the Elite was that old

Get the Arcade. If the Arcade was manufactured within the last year it should have 512MB of on-board memory. The big selling factor of the Elite is that it's got a HDD and it's black. If you already have the HDD there's no need to get the Elite unless you want a black console.

My HDD is matching the Elite design, as since I have a 120GB original one.

Optical aspects by side, which one is better?

The Elite is just 10 bucks more for me and both are brand new.

I would check that the console hasn't been modded/banned unless that is your intention to buy. There be a lot of them floating about these waters.

The original Elites are even older than Falcons. Some are Zephyrs. If you can get a Jasper Arcade (it should have a built in memory card) you should be good to go.

I've never heard of any differences for the elites on the inside. The Zephyrs came with the extra GPU heatsink, but these also were applied to Arcade and Premium models eventually. The 2nd heatsink has now been done away with in current revisions.

I'd go for the arcade because its cheaper.

Both brand new.

I know what to look out for, my very only question is:

are there technical differences?

I have a 512MB mem card for carrying around my profile and a big hdd for music, game installs etc...

So I don't care a lot about the built-in storage, but if that is the REAL ONLY technical difference then tell me :)

edit: / additon:

well both consoles are just the bare consoles so that's why the price difference is so small.

I'll buy them from a big German web shop. (a trusted one, so let's not get OT about web shops ^^)

It just seems suspicious because they are stripping the consoles of what is in the box, but to your actual question - if you find one of each that are Jaspers, then the only difference is the Arcade will have 512MB of onboard memory.

As others have said, I'd go with the Arcade, unless you can get a MW2 Elite bare as you'll be guaranteed a Jasper then.

The 512MB on-board memory and the color are the only real difference you would notice between the Elite and Arcade. Technically, the Arcade has newer hardware than the Elite. The Elite uses the older Falcon motherboards where the Arcade uses the newer Jasper.

On a brand new Elite and a brand new Arcade the only difference is the built-in 512MB memory card on Jasper-based Arcades.

Otherwise though there could be differences but it depends how old they are. If they're both 2009 manufactured models they'll both be Jaspers anyway, but if they're old stock, say, 2008, then it could be a Falcon. Is there any way you can check manufacture dates at all? It's shown on the back of the console which you can see through a hole on the box without actually opening it.

Technically, the Arcade has newer hardware than the Elite. The Elite uses the older Falcon motherboards where the Arcade uses the newer Jasper.

Absolutely incorrect. The 2009 manufactured Elites are also Jaspers - I have two here.

The new Elites are Jaspers, too.

The shop guarantees that both are Jaspers.

The Arcade is a 256MB onboard memory one by the way.

Oh, I didn't know they gave the Elites Jaspers now. I bought my Elite in October but it was manufactured in 2008 and it has the Falcon. Since your sure of they're both Jaspers, go with whatever is cheaper since all the incentives to get the Elite are gone except it being black.

Yeah I forgot they got a revision recently. I got mine before that revision was in stock around here locally.

Well if you have established that both are Jaspers and you are certain neither are banned consoles (/ are brand new) and dont care about the arcades memory then go the one which color you like more.

Are both consoles the same price? if so it doesn't really matter which you get.

I would go for the arcade as you have stated you like the colour better... and you get an extra 256mb of memory, not that you need it but you can back saves up on to it.

Well the Arcade is 10 bucks cheaper and yea, not that I need the mem inside, but who knows what it can be good for.

I also prefer white over black, so yeah, all those aspects say "get the Arcade", that's what I thought, too.

But having seen ROD and E74 raining down on me earlier on two eBay consoles I'm now going to get the "most reliable possible" - a Jasper one! (And I just wanted to check back if there is ANY technical advantage in terms of stability in the Elites - that's why) (please no ps3 comments now. I know why the x360 suits me better, trust me)

AND: from a big webshop that puts 2 years guarantee on all of its products, including those Xbox 360's I can choose from.

Looks like it's going to be the Arcade then.

More bang for the buck ;)
