Man Spends $300,000 on Virtual Item!

Recommended Posts

This has already been done once with Neverdie in this or was it secondlife? The guy paid alot (less than 300K although this was a cpl years back) but paid alot of real life cash for a space station he turned into a rec hub/club and basically makes cash from selling rights on the station, apartments, etc as well as real life adverts and promoting music in the club.

Eitherway apparently this guy made quite a profit from it.

Heres an article: http://newsblaze.com/story/200605090601020...r/topstory.html

""It's amazing to think that I have recouped half my $100,000 dollar investment while the Club is still under construction," says Jon 'NEVERDIE' Jacobs. "

You can't say that. I just think the Godzilla facepalm is funny. I understand the business side much better than most. Just look at WOW, never played it but imagine if there was an opportunity like this at that time? So believe me, I get it. :D

Business or pleasure... I could care less.

The guy had 300K burning a hole in his pocket and spent it as he saw fit; more power to him.

It's his money, his time and it doesn't interfere with anyone else. I wish more people would

find hobbies like this.

P.S.

If he manages to make money on the deal... NICE!

I agree, he is an investor. These people understand that in order to make money you need to lose money through investment.

As ridiculous as this may seem, I see it as an investment. I think it's quite obvious that someone with $300K has some sense with money. Think of the money he could make in the long run by selling items on his ?Crystal Palace Space Station?.

I don't think this is as stupid as it sounds. If this MMO game pulls in enough money to function as a real bank, the guy just bought one for incredibly cheap. Not to mention that sales in MMO games are illegal and this bank doesn't have the risk of crashing from people pulling out.

Exactly. That's the gist of the article from how I read it.

You know what's pure fail? The Dot Com Boom and Bust. People spent hundreds on millions of dollars, even billions, to create sites that completely failed. Example: pets.com.

ha, I think some of the face-palm posts may not understand it.

I think they understand that it's extremely foolish to spend real money in a virtual game.

If he only makes like half the money he invested, he can sell the crystal palace station thingy, and if he's lucky, he'll get the 300k back, so its still profit.

As an investment I'd say let him do what he wants, he can earn money from the thing! But spending that much money to simply own a virtual item in-game... If I had that kind of money spare and I could invest in an item on my favourite game, I definitely would :p

Exactly... and if it floats your boat, more power to you, too.

On an Income->Cost ratio, I've definitely "wasted" an equivilent amount of money on terrible movies

and other entertainment expenses.
