Rudy
I bought a MBP for my gf and so far the only problem has been migrating her picture collection over to the new computer. On Windows XP she used to have folders for each year (2003, 2004 .... 2009) and within each folder she would have certain events with the pictures inside. When we tried to move her collection to iPhoto and created a giant mess, it created a bunch of events from the folders (which are ok) but since there's a lot of them (over 300) the lack of the year "sub folder" makes everything a big mess. I tried to create a smart album for each year but it's not ideal, and I also found trying to access the pictures outside of iPhoto to be quite challenging (it's fine when you're in an OSX app but when you're in something like the stupid facebook java picture uploader thing it doesn't work as good). I've been using OSX for a long time but I don't have pictures on my computer so I never used iPhoto, I was wondering if someone could share some tips to make my gf's move to OSX as smooth as possible. It is pretty hard since her collection is pretty big (well over 20,000 pictures).
Elliott
When scrolling through the Events panel (by grabbing the scroll bar and dragging it; scroll wheel/two finger scroll doesn't do it for some reason), iPhoto will show the date range that's currently in view. Not quite as easy as double-clicking on a year, but in the long run I'd take the event thumbnails over a slightly faster double-click any day. If that doesn't work, maybe just ditch iPhoto and go back to manual organization. It sucks, but I don't know of any other way to make iPhoto split events by year other than the Smart Albums (which, when you think about it, are really no different to set up than manual folders in your file system :p). KoL Veteran Posted January 2, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 2, 2010 (edited) This is what I do. I have a folder for each year, inside the folder I have the albums with date and name of the event. When I started to use iPhoto I moved the each event from the folders to the iPhoto album. In Events sometimes I had two or more events for the same album, I just merged them and name it. Took me a while to get everything organized, events, places etc. but i really like how it is organized. Here is a pic of how it looks. When I want to upload an album to Facebook I don't use the Facbook thing on iPhoto. I just export the album to a folder on the desktop (smaller size for the photos since facebook resize them) and when I upload them I delete them.
