NowGamer reviews FFXIII, gives it 7.9

Pitchforks at the ready. NowGamer has gone live with the first major Western review of the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIII. The score? An eyebrow-raising 7.9/10.

Here's a snip:

"Each area of the game features exquisitely detailed architecture and structural design. However, this fidelity just highlights the fact that the places the characters of FFXIII inhabit are merely contrived, linear Skinner Boxes for players to navigate. At one point in the game, two of the main characters visit a theme park. It's obvious that each shrub and wall in the place has been designed with great care, but it doesn't feel like a real place."

Find the review through the link. We got our copy of FFXIII today. So far, we have to say it's amazing.

If you can stomach the wait, the game releases in the west for PS3 and 360 on March 9.

Such a bad feeling about this after all the negativity coming from the Japanese/Japanese importers...

The **** is nowgamer and why should I care?

"...but it doesn't feel like a real place."

It's a ****ing game morons.

It's a 3 page review you can either go read and see what impressions someone has on a game or quite frankly ignore the topic. I have no idea why you're losing the plot.

It's getting heavy criticism for it's linearity in comparison to how that's succeeded so well in other FF games. Yes 10 was quite linear in places, but it seems 13 is even worse.

This review is exactly what I anticipated with the game, especially after all of the lousy previews random sites posted after playing 25+ hours into the game

That's too bad that my first experience with the series could be a possible huge letdown. :(

It actually might appeal more because of what they did to it. I'm pretty sure it's getting bad reviews from the final fantasy die hards because it's "dumbed down" to appeal to a wider audience.

Don't think it's really the title that needs dumbed down to sell more, quite possibly the best selling RPG around, and it's even gone multiplatform this time.

i usually wait until IGN posts a review and go by that, dumb or smart, i've been doing it for like 6+ years now and buying games based on their reviews has never let me down.

Well, the Xenosaga series were very similar. No towns, the maps were pretty linear, and there were lots and lots of cutscenes.

I really enjoyed those despite the fact, so FF13 should be pretty enjoyable.

Who is NowGamer,.. and why should I care what they say?

Someone who's played the game, and I'm guessing you'd care for a read if you were interested in some impressions on FF13.

I guess my worst fears are starting to become reality. Well, at least us PS3 owners have Final Fantasy Versus 13 and 14 to look forward to ey? :D

I'm honestly surprised that the low score was entirely due to the "lack of realism". The title itself denotes a lack of realism, and most Final Fantasy worlds and universes focus on the fantastical rather than the possible. From what I have read, there is no serious critique of game beyond the praise the combat system gets and a little scrutiny to underwhelming characters. I don't mind reading his opinion of the game but at least put some more about the game itself in there rather than feelings and vibes.

OMG a low scoring FF game!! Could it be that after 13 games one is off the mark? I think so. It wont deter die hard fans or even most people really due to the weight the game carrys, but its interesting to see the fnboys jump out already.

im not saying the game is bad or that it wont get those 9+ scores but lets face it 1 slightly off title aint the end of the line, its maybe jus not the game many were expecting.

I get what he's saying about the environments. They put a lot of detail into the town but they didn't put a lot of thought into making the town appear like a real town. In other words, lack of interactivity.

another review... gamekult gave it a 7/10 (review in french).

They state that it's very linear. No NPCs and no shops, just to name those 2.

And who care who or what NowGamer is ? They got their hands on the bloody game and they did an in-depth review of it.

/edit: rpgland gave it a 7/10
