Ironman273
PS3 hack plays Blu-ray backups, should send Motorstorm values soaringBy Tim Stevens posted Jan 5th 2010 7:25AM The PS3 has thus far proven to be something a tough nut to crack for those wanting to play backups on non-modified consoles, but word on the web is that a technique has been found that will make it possible -- if the stars happen to align properly for your hardware configuration. What you need is a PS3 model capable of running Linux, Ubuntu, Windows XP on top of that, a suite of utilities, a copy of the original Motorstorm, and a Blu-ray burner. Get all that configured properly and you should be able to use the technique at the read link to play those copies of games that have thus far been expensive coasters. Given the complexity of this approach we can't be 100 percent sure it's legit, but for what it's worth there is video "proof" after the break, and should you attempt this feat of hackery yourself please do let us know how you get on. Jason S. Global Moderator Posted January 5, 2010 Global Moderator Share Posted January 5, 2010 so lets break this down.... time and effort to do all this, purchase a copy of Motorstorm, blu-ray burner, blank 50GB discs. sounds really expensive to me just to play "backups" why people cant just wait for prices to drop on video games is beyond me. Ironman273
uh... buggered post Ahh the video was removed already Sheesh, don't be so damn critical of everything ;) so lets break this down.... time and effort to do all this, purchase a copy of Motorstorm, blu-ray burner, blank 50GB discs. sounds really expensive to me just to play "backups"why people cant just wait for prices to drop on video games is beyond me. I heard the same argument when CD burners were expensive and when DVD burners were expensive. Prices will come down eventually.

Elessar
The funny thing is you can get Motorstorm for about $10 online these days...waste of money and time if you ask me.

You use Motorstorm (the disc version) to boot the PS3 and then play a burned game... So far KillZone 2, PES 2008 and Burnout Paradise have been confirmed working. Jason S. Global Moderator Posted January 5, 2010 Global Moderator Share Posted January 5, 2010 Better than paying $60 for a game. lol that's insane. to each his own i guess... wait 2-3 weeks, $60 game goes on sale for $45. 2 mo later, the game is $30. 1 more month and the game is <$20. AbandonedTrolley
I agree, whilst it's impressve to see it's been 'done' the current cost of the media doesn't make it that appealing.

I agree it's strictly proof of concept type stuff right now but eventually the burner and media prices will be cheap enough to make it a financially viable option. Plus it may open up the possibility of playing back up images, removing the cost of burners and media. Of course most would probably be downloading the images, which would mean long download times. AgentGray
Better than paying $60 for a game. and you're admitting to wanting to use this for piracy. Nice. and this is why we can't have nice things. God I hate the homebrew community for enabling pirating little snots. (Homebrew itself is AWESOME pity it's thousands of idiots just wanting free stuff for every one talented person doing anything fun with it.) IceBreakerG
Gamefly is still cheaper than this. For the price of a blu-ray burner by itself, you can get like a year of Gamefly. I'd rather go that route. This process would take too long anyway.
offroadaaron
I really do not think that you should be posting the process itself being that it can be used to create Warez. Not that I condone this but in Australia it is legal to make back ups and have mod chips.

OK, I removed it, although I posted it more as a "look at all the hoops you'd have to jump through" than a how-to guide. Didn't think anyone would go through all that trouble for such little payback. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted January 5, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 5, 2010 Yeah guys (and gals) somewhat shady grounds here. With that said, I know it is definitely incredibly interesting news it has finally been done, just no showing people directly how to do it is all. But I figured it would happen eventually, but it did take way longer than usual it seems.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted January 5, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 5, 2010 Btw for those complaining about the price, the only way that will change is when people start buying the media. Well now that'll happen obviously with the early adopters to this hack. Prices will fall eventually. As for the UK, you can buy a 10 pack of blu rays for ?50 which is obviously "better" than buy 1 game at RRP of ?40. The price you spend on all the tools etc is offset when you download just a couple of games. Same with any hack/console. p.s not encouraging anyone to start hacking/pirating, but just explaining the price really isn't an issue like you guys are making out, especially not in the UK. I never said anything about condoning piracy. Hell I don't even have a PS3. I simply made a comment regarding numbers. Take a few deep breaths and walk away. Kudos Veteran Posted January 5, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 5, 2010 This has little to do with piracy... yet. At the moment it's still all about hackers and will be until pirates figure out a way to make or save a buck.
