The Final Fantasy XIII team may move onto "'next generation' forms of play" now the game's complete, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada's told Edge, and that "this type of game" may cease to be made at the firm. The comments are likely to cause shock in the FF fanboy fraternity.

"I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special, and that it's going to be well received by the audience," Wada said.

"But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some 'next generation' forms of play."

Wada said that the expectation of Square internal development is to create new experiences.

"I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they're strictly catering to the particular audience they have now," he added.

FFXIII has now shipped in Japan, selling 1.6 million units in December. It's planned to release on March 9 in the US and Europe.

Even Square buckling under what they've just created? Hope this isn't damage control for what might be some surprising western review scores.

Just give us our FF7 remake first kthx.

I wonder why they never mention anything about Final Fantasy Versus XIII i assumed it would have the same play style.

It doesn't apparently it's going to be more like Kingdom Hearts/FF7 Crisis Core.

Within recent Japanese gaming magazine interviews, Tetsuya Nomura has stated that Versus XIII's gameplay will be a realistic derivation of Kingdom Hearts's battle system with some elements of a third-person shooter aspect. Nomura has also stated that the game will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (i.e. Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a darker, bleaker world that is intended to counter previous Final Fantasy installments. In formulating a realistic world, Nomura has stated that he wants the characters to be "believable" and thus realistic. As a testament towards his desire for realism, in the PlayStation Premier trailer, in contrast to previous Final Fantasy titles, Versus XIII had a greater display of graphic violence with an instance of blood.

I like that idea. I loved Crisis Core (I refuse to play Kingdom Hearts for personal reasons)

I really want FF XIII however Versus XIII looks so much cooler to me due to the Dark theme... and the guy and his many swords.

I honestly believe the series hasn't been the same since FF7,8,9 I wish they would go back to that style/feel I guess....Ill admit though FF12 was pretty good, but I'm not opposed to seeing them try to make an ARPG...it might be surprisingly good.

The release of Final Fantasy XIII really reminds me of when Final Fantasy X came out.

At the time I thought Final Fantasy IX and Crono Cross were amazing games. But I've had about enough of turn-based play. Then everyone was raving about Final Fantasy X, so when I eventually played it, the gameplay was took a step back to even before the PS1-gen games!

I was very happy when Square implemented a very original type of gameplay to Final Fantasy XII. Too bad it had to be implemented with a very dull story. But I was hoping they would tweak something like that and perfect it in Final Fantasy XIII. But no dice.

Remember when the first trailers came out for Final Fantasy XIII? How everyone was amazed by the CGI? And they said that the entire game will be like CGI and it will be like you're "playing" advent children? What happened to that? I just think that Square likes moving backwards. I just don't understand why it takes them 5 years to develop something that takes them two steps back.

Yeah ever since Final Fantasy X the games have been VERY linear in a physical way in which there is no over world and you are corralled from one place to another by the geography of the landscape. where as with previous FF games you could just about go anywhere whenever you wanted. now they add instant travel with air ships and stuff. its just not as awesome.

Square has made some ARPGs in the past such as:

Final Fantasy Adventure Series (Gameboy)

Secret of Mana

Chrono Trigger...

I consider those ARPGish.

Chrono Trigger? I can't really see how it's ARPGish. It seems as traditional as a Japanese RPG can get.

In any event, it's unfortunate, but games of this sort have definitely lost a lot of their popularity since the PS1 days. Ever since the PS2 even, RPGs seem to be moving towards more action RPG/MMO style gameplay. There are certainly still people (like myself) who like these kinds of games, but perhaps not enough to necessitate the millions of dollars it must have cost to develop something like FFXIII.

I think that games like this can live on with platforms like the DS, where development costs are much lower and they can cater to a smaller section of gamers.

I don't think Square will stop making them people in Japan will always buy these titles. What is not known is how much Square-Enix is hoping on a massive sales in the west.

If SE are indeed hoping for massive sales in the west and these sales do not come then we "might" see them cut back or even we might not even see them in the west? The PAL region had to wait until VII before it saw a FF game.

What a great way to sell a game, talk about how it is a dying genre and it may be the last of it's kind before it is even released. Sounds like he WANTS the game to do badly.

Turn based is not an "older" way of playing, it's a different way.

Turn-based is an older way of playing, because it was the first way of playing RPGs thanks in part to its table-top roots.
