Infinity Ward is not creating Modern Warfare 3, according to a VG247 source, and is instead working on something "completely new".

The details come from US recruitment channels.

Infinity Ward has this far avoided the issue of its work after Modern Warfare 2, saying no decision had been made on further projects in the run up to the shooter's launch last November.

"Right now we don't have a clue what our next game is going to be, and we won't know what it will be until we finish with Modern Warfare 2, which won't be for a while," studio frontman Rob Bowling told IGN UK last October.

MW2 DLC packs are scheduled to release this "spring" as a timed 360 exclusive.

It's unclear where the third game will be made if IW really has gone AWOL from the series.

We were told by one dev source that a Canadian studio was handling it, but another pointed to newly-formed Sledgehammer Games, headed by ex-Visceral bosses Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey.

Sledgehammer, based in the Bay Area, is currently recruiting for a multiplayer designer with "five years experience working on current AAA multiplayer shooters for current consoles and PC."

The identity of Sledgehammer's first project is yet to be announced.

Activision's only Canadian developer is Vancouver-based Radical Entertainment, the studio behind last year's free-roaming adventure, Prototype.

Rumour surrounding the Call of Duty franchise in general is escalating. A report yesterday claimed that Treyarch is currently putting together a story-focused, Vietnam-based episode in the series for release later this year.

Activision had not returned calls at the time of writing.

I can't see anyone but IW making MW3 especially with the characters they have established. I can see another company making a game in that universe and calling it modern warefare: with a secondary title and no number

The feel of MW/MW2 is perfect and I think any other dev's making it will ruin it ... it's hard to emulate something unless you were involved directly. For instance, take the Treyarch games ... they're ok, but there's something about the feel of the controls ... just doesn't fit. I hope MW3 comes because I'm running out of Modern Day Shooters!!!!

Whatever it is, it better involve Captain Price.

I agree. For all the complaining that the games are too short (yes, I agree!), the characters, the stories, the feel ... everything about them made them fantastic games that I've played multiple times through in campaign mode as well as Spec Ops etc ...

eh the campaign isn't that great, it's a spectacle, but the story and characters got pretty silly. And I am really not that interested in a another "how many enemies can you throw at me" styled game. I'd like to see something different.

And I don't understand what's so great about Captain Price...

Guys remember this is activision we're talking about here they are interested in money more than anything else. They know people will buy mw3 no matter who makes it and will probably end up planning their future releases accordingly.

So we go from back and forth from IW and Treyarch to saying, IW will do MW from now on, to now saying well it may go to someone else?

Treyarch doing another Vietnam style game that will fail as hard as World at War did is fine by me. But I highly doubt that IW will dump MW3 onto someone else.

I'm calling bullcrap on this. I don't see Infinity Ward giving the Modern Warfare series away after it became clear they were already upset with Treyarch's work on Call of Duty.

Not their choice, cry all they want their wages still come from bobby & co.

I'm calling this now: MW3 is going to involve some sort of subscription! :D

I still stand by my prediction that MW3 will come out this year, and has been in development since last year

We'll see CoD: 'Nam this year. MW3 won't come this soon. I'm willing to put money on it. :x

Given that Activision gives each company two years for their games allowing them to flipflop (iw, treyarch, iw, treyarch).. MW3 won't be out. This is Treyarch's year for a release (even if you were joking which I think you.. are?)

Why would you think that? It's not going to happen!

Didn't Bungie say they were not doing another Halo after 2? Yeahhh looked how that turned out.

LOL

I don't believe this.

What? Bungie said they weren't going to do another Halo after Halo2... The one with the cliffhanger? Bungie said they'd never do a Halo4.

I think I stand corrected. Perhaps what I heard was no more Halo's after 3?

Activision will definitely not let the MW franchise die. Even if IW does not do 3, they will find someone else (maybe treyarch since they know the system and stuff already). I hope that whatever IW does next is good.

They changed their minds. Most likely Halo: Reach is going to be the last Bungie made one for a while.

http://negativegamer.com/2009/08/26/bungie...n-no-more-halo/

It was a very serious worry that we would soon be running out of Halo related games to play; after all, there are only two games confirmed for the future. These worries came after comments made by Lars Bakken, a senior designer at Bungie, to CVG in which he said, “in terms of Bungie-produced Halo games, ODST and then Reach is probably all you’re going to get.”

Thus steps in Brian Jarrard, director of PR and the Bungie community, to quickly backtrack on Bakken’s comments, telling Videogamer a very definitive “we just don’t know at this point”. He went on to say, “I wouldn’t confirm or deny at this point”, and, “we’re going to keep looking at making the games we want to make. Maybe that’s Halo, maybe it’s not; we’ll just have to wait and see

While it may not technically be their choice, I have a very hard time believing that they wouldn't have some sort of sway in saying 'hey, we're working on game X right now, but please let us have Modern Warfare 3 on the backburner while we do so.'

I seriously hope IW has nothing to do with mw3. The gross fact that they even considered and went forward with making a match making system for the PC version of mw2 shows that they have no desire to create a community orientated FPS, and that their extra capital they hope to make off of PC gamers with DLC will most defiantly be short lived. If IW has anything to do with the PC version of MW3, they will be wasting their time, as it is the PC version of mw2 is the #1 most pirated game so far, and that is fully because of their decision to screw PC players. I can't get passed more than 2 annoying rounds of mw2, before I am shutting it down and opening up cod4.

IW Fails, Period.

Are you in the category of "I slammed IW down everywhere and petitioned to not buy this game for the PC but I can be seen on Steam's anti-MW2 group playing ... MW2?"
