Halo: Reach to be biggest seller in 2010

Recommended Posts

Microsoft and Bungie's Halo: Reach could be the biggest selling game of 2010, according to a new survey conducted by GamesIndustry.biz.

The prequel to Microsoft's number one Xbox 360 franchise was singled out by industry professionals taking part in the annual GamesIndustry.biz Network Survey, with those participating backing the first-person shooter over some of the biggest franchises in the business.

Following Halo: Reach as the title expected to be the second biggest seller is Square Enix's long-awaited Final Fantasy XIII, a game that has already sold over 1.7 million units in Japan since release in mid-December.

Other titles in the top sellers list for 2010 include the return of Blizzard's StarCraft series, the next title in Activision's all-conquering Call of Duty franchise (developed this year by Treyarch) and European favourite FIFA from Electronic Arts.

Looking at the results for the titles tipped by Network members as a 'dark horse' for this year, the top ten is almost entirely made up of new intellectual property - an encouraging sign for the industry.

Top of the list is the long in development Xbox 360 exclusive Alan Wake from Remedy Entertainment, followed by PlayStation exclusive Heavy Rain from Quantic Dream.

Also in the top five are THQ's Darksiders - due for releases this week and already picking up strong reviews from the specialist press ? Disney and Black Rock's follow-up to Pure, the racer Split Second, and Bethesda and Splash Damage's multiplayer shooter Brink.

Looking at specific gaming genres, the GI Network expects that the music genre ? which peaked with franchises such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Singstar ? is the most likely to decline in 2010, with over 33 per cent of those polled anticipating a slow down in releases and success this year.

In contrast, games that are likely to see the most growth are those in the casual and social space, as companies such as Electronic Arts and Take-Two move some of the biggest franchises to networks such as Facebook.

Interestingly, the action and adventure category is also expected to enjoy a resurgence in popularity, following success in 2009 with critical and commercial hits from Sony's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Eidos' Batman: Arkham Asylum.

The GamesIndustry.biz Network consists of over 9900 members working in all areas of the games business, from publishing and development to retail and education.

GT5 at the bottom of the list is the biggest LOL, MW2 to sell more than GT5 in 2010, do they have a brain hemmerge? Past GT games have sold 9-15 million.

Gran Turismo (10.85 million shipped)

Gran Turismo 2 (9.37 million shipped)

Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (14.89 million shipped)

Gran Turismo 4 (10.76 million shipped)

With the size of GT5, hype building, amount of content and everything else, my bets are on it outselling everything next year (single platform sales).

Halo Reach? Did they not get the memo about ODST which sank like a brick? I think people are a little sick to death of Halo.

I highly doubt Halo Reach will be the biggest seller of 2010.

I think BioShock 2 will sell better.

GT5 and/or God of War 3 should be higher.

Sadly Halo Reach probably will be the biggest seller.

APB is a very good choice for a dark horse ----> Basically a GTA MMO? Who doesn't want that?

just putting in my two cents.

This gen, it's really hard for me to imagine a console exclusive to be the biggest seller of the year (except for Nintendo that is). It's also hard to imagine Bioshock 2 to be a huge seller because it doesn't have mainstream appeal and the success of the first game was based on word of mouth and internet chatter.

I know in the past I've been very cynical about FFXIII but to be honest I really think it is a contender to be the biggest seller, especially that it's now released on 2 platforms and will maybe be ported to the PC.

With that said, if a console exclusive will be the biggest seller, it would definitely be god of war 3 over halo reach. After the Jan 15 embargo lift for GOW3, I think people will start to realize why. Don't get me wrong, Halo Reach will be huge. And the sales will probably continue way past the end of the year because all of the bratty kids will convince their friends to have their parents buy it as well.

I think that had to do with it being Halo 3.5a, while if i'm correct, this is all-new. Halo fans will eat it up, I bet 9 million sales.

I would be shocked if GoW3 is in top 10 sales for the year, platform independent. Past GoW games have barely sold 2 million, especially in a year that has GT5 and FFXIII. It may not out-sell Dante's Inferno (multiplatform) or Bayonetta (same), but I still think it'll be one of the best rated/reviewed games of the year.

Exactly, just because ODST didn't sell like Halo 2 or 3 did doesn't mean Reach wont. Lots of Halo fans held off on ODST because it was more of a side story/side-expansion unlike Reach which is a direct prequel to the main story.

Why do so many people hate halo is it just because it's been good for so long? I think that has something to do with bungie being a good developer not people being stupid enough to buy it.

... Sorry what?

I've never understood Halo. Well that's a lie, I can see the appeal of the first. It was a decent console shooter but the rest are average at best. While Bungie were still making their clinical by numbers shooter other studios were trying new things.

lol Starcraft? We're not even sure if they are releasing this year. lol.

Starcraft is being released this year along with WoW: Cataclysm, Diablo III is the no show for this year.

Halo and Guitar Hero/Rockband are the two huge cash cows I really don't understand how people can just keep buying the literal crap up.

Maybe because they're good games.

I'm excited for this. I was disappointed with Halo: ODST and the fact that multiplayer is still just Halo 3. I want something new and innovating. When I saw leaked caps for new weapons (the BR was one of them) I was excited. I haven't played Halo 3 in almost a year, that's how burnt out I got on it (and switched to COD) so I'm hoping to MAYBE see a little more realism with the game and new options with gameplay.

New options being similar to COD's sprinting. That is probably the one quirk that really made it hard to play Halo again. Just can't get used to being one speed all the time. I like sprinting :D.

But they're not and the game base (in the case of GH/RB) is completely over saturated.

No, they're not good games for you, but the fact that they sell tens of millions of copies when many games can't even hit 1M certaintly says something about them.
