left 4 dead 2 issues

Recommended Posts

i rented this game out just after christmas and i played with 3 of my friends online campaign, over the course of 2 days. i rented it again about 3 days ago, and tried to play with the same friends doing the multiplayer side of things, and suffered from humongous lag and connection failures. i've freshed up my pc with defrag, disk cleanup etc in case its screwing the connection up, i've cleared the xbox 360 cache to freshen that up as well, tried again and it worked fine for about 4 hours, then i had to go to work. fair enough. i come back 3 hours later and the lag has returned, either with a direct internet connection, and/or through the pc.

i've checked around and found that people were having these issues when the game first came out, but valve resolved some of those issues. is anyone experiencing the same problems i am? or is it just me?

dedicated servers i rarely ever get into ad when i do it lags like hell. local host its ok for a little while then it starts to lag after about half an hour of play time, until it renders the game unplayable and end result is getting booted off live and/or kicked out of party chat.

Your computer being defragged won't have any affect on your internet connection at all, even if you are bridging the connection.

Do you have lag with any other game you play with Live? Typically, you'll experience major lag with other games and not just Left 4 Dead 2.

Do you play with the same people each time your game starts lagging?

yea atm mw2 or cod5 but only when im hosting. no probs with need for speed online or l4d1. and usually the same 3 people, no matter which of us is hosting. its weird because i have a 20mb connection and everyone else i know either has the same connection or a slightly lower MB connection and yet they can host MW2 or L4D2 with no issues with anyone else. its seems to be just me. my hosting capabilities went downhill when the NXE got released but i'm not sure whats going on now. with l4D2 its the first time its been so bad that i get disconnected from live alltogether

When you bridge through the computer, it's directly plugged into the modem? Or is the computer connecting to a wifi router?

It's weird that you'd have most problems with L4D2 although to be honest, I think most of the people who play L4D2 seem to have HORRIBLE connections. Majority of the times when I'm in games, it's always fluctuating between red/yellow bars and my connection is decent enough where I should (or in theory) be green 100% of the time. Never had any issues with COD4, COD5, Halo 3, or MW2..

It seems to be something with L4D2 that has unbearably awful connections throughout ALL users. Or at least the past few weeks.

the pc is plugged into the modem and then the xbox is normally connected to the pc by cable as well. no wifi since it doesnt give you the connection you should get.

i know alot of people are having similar issues, but its just weird that i'm getting kicked off live and all my apps on the pc as a result of a game.

the issues with other games only ever show up when im the host which after getting booted i end up not hosting until i turn my xbox back on 90% of the time.

When do your normally play video games? during peak hours? Is this when you suffer from lag or not? Also what package do you have with your internet provider? Run a SpeedTest and post your results here: http://speedtest.net I ask this because you said you suffer from lag even when directly connected to the modem.

speed test with xbox on at same time [virgin media 20mb] so its roughly right. without the xbox on you can add another mb or 2 on top of that test. so i'm getting the speeds i should be or at least in the region 99% of the time.

and tbh i play in the morning through to the late afternoon, then when i get in from work in the evenings as well. the lag is generally experienced on L4D2 and the host craps out if its me on MW2 no matter when i play [except for private matches]

Have a word with Virgin first to make sure they aren't 'traffic shaping' your P2P connections. Then get the most direct connection possible (Cable > Router > 360) and eliminate things one by one.

Though I have a friend who is on Virgin 20mbs. MW2 on the PC is unplayable though give him a dedi server and things are fine. :(

Well if you are host, it's going to be extremely laggy for everyone else because you are only getting 52 kB/s roughly upstream, which is absolutely terrible (and for hosting any MW2 or L4D2 games). Now I looked at VirginMedia's website and as you said you are on the 20MB package, the "XL package". According to here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html the upstream for your package is maxed out at 768kbps (around 96 kB/s). Your downstream looks absolutely fine though, I think it is just upstream that is causing the lag here for you.

I would suggest you either upgrade to the XXL package if you can afford it, which will give you up to an upstream of 1.5mbps. If you can't, when you are connected through your computer. Just make sure everything is closed that would be using the internet, unless there isn't anything running already. If that does not help, try and stay directly connected to it.

You could also call VirginMedia and have them test your line and see if there is any problems because you are not getting all of your upstream (about half it). Though you will not always get your full upstream (or downstream) because of different factors like distance, peak times and so forth.

Are the people you are playing with around your area or much further?
