[Rumour] Blizzard giving consideration to mandatory authenticators

Recommended Posts

I don't know why people continue with the same argument, yours has been a soap box topic for years... big business versus the little guy. It's antiquated and unrealistic. Everything you argue is about "ME" how does this change effect "me". You want to complain about a minor inconvenience to yourself and you expect everyone to fall in line not because you have been inconvenienced but because of the "principal". Right... Anyone with any kind of sense in them understands how this minor cost will benefit them in the long run. Like Blade said, some mother ****ers always gotta ice skate uphill.

They can just pack one into the box for Cataclysm. Problem solved.

(Though I guess then the account compromised calls will be replaced with "I've lost my authenticator" calls.)

I had an authenticator on my account, but since I play on 2 computers it was kind of a pain to always keep with me so I removed it.

I think it should only prompt you when it detects that you are connecting from a computer that you haven't played on before. Similar to how a cookie is stored when you log into a website, and you are only prompted for authentication again if the cookie expires or if you try to login from another computer.

I have already posted my views on this in the thread, why does people always seem to breeze by the entire thread just to repeat the same argument one more time? And you are fully aware that the game is based on monthly subscription so not only have I paid enough money to cover both game-time and a Ferrari for one of the employees, they also rake in enough cash on a larger scale to buy a medium sized country every year - Stop setting this up as if they were barely making ends meat

So I'd say use your brain and stop just bending over every time a company wants to squeeze you for a bit of extra cash, at least grow some balls and stand up for a few simple principles no matter how mundane they are or at the very least, let other people do it.

Right.... because your point of view automatically dismisses all other points of view and opinion. Maybe they have you on their ignore list so they didn't get the ultimate truth from your post? Ever consider that?

Yet he QUOTES me and starts the argument? Yeah, well thought out there Shadrack  And he basically asked me to explain the views I'm referring to when I have already explained them. Thanks for trying to stir something up though, nice try (Y)

Already pay ?9 a month for the subscription, like heck i'm paying ?7 for one of those tokens. If they do this, i'll definately go to Aion.

As said above, if it comes with Cataclysm then that'll be alright.

I heard a rumor that With the collectors Edition They will be including a authenticator...but yeah we'll see , I already Have one just because Im a security freak.

If they're going to make it mandatory, they need to provide the materials needed to play the game. Forcing people to pay an extra fee seems ridiculous, especially when a mandatory authenticator would save their business time and effort (money) in having to restore accounts. If anything, it'd be an investment to give them away for free.

Of course, it'd also be in their best interests to first give them away at a price, and slowly reduce that price over a period of time in order to make up for the costs of the inevitable mandatory authenticators. Who knows how much it actually costs to make those little things? Certainly not $6 I'd imagine. And the people in Europe appear to have it worse than we do.

Before anyone jumps me though, yes, I have an authenticator. Found it necessary, especially since I play at work in my free time as well.

+1. I do not play WoW so it is mostly irrelevant to me directly. But if they are going to change the way you log into the game that requires you to obtain a physical object you do not currently own (or the iphone app or whatever) then they should at least be willing to provide it to customers for free. That monthly fee they have going for them should be more than enough to cover the cost of the authenticator and still earn them profit.

Beyond that, requiring the authenticator and making people pay for it would be the same as a company changing its policy and making its customers eat the cost of they wish to continue using their software. AnyDVD/CloneDVD for example switched their policy awhile ago. It use to be free lifetime updates to both products once you buy it. They changed it so you now have to pay a annual fee for updates. Instead of screwing over their current customer base (pre-annual fee customers) by forcing them to either pay up or not get updates to the software, anyone with a license from before the policy change still gets free lifetime updates. Any new customer has to pay the annual fee.

Blizzard is essentially going to do the opposite with this, anyone with an account pre mandatory authenticator is going to be SoL, they either have to pay for one to continue playing or stop playing, whereas anyone buying a new subscription is probably going to be forced to buy the authenticator up front.

Now, I have not been tracking the details and what not as I do not play WoW, but it would be a seriously rude move if Blizzard required everyone to buy an authenticator to continue playing with the account they have already bought and paid for. They should at the very least offer the authenticator to current users for free (current as in before the policy change) if they go through with it. Then they would be free to charge slightly more on a new account to be able to sell them an authenticator when they purchase their account/make their first monthly subscription payment. But whatever they do they should not shaft their current player base by forcing them to buy one.

Either give pre-policy change users a free authenticator, or make it mandatory only for new accounts (accounts created post-policy change).

The only situation I can see them making authenticators mandatory is if they're provided in the Cataclysm box - they not so cruel as to expect people to fork out extra just to keep playing. It's just a decision they'll have to make - whether the initial hit on giving out that many authenticators outweighs the ongoing support costs (and poor response time as result).

If you own a Iphone/Touch you can simply download the software for free from Itunes appstore anyway. Its not a big deal. Not to mention they are only 6 bucks, its hardly going to break the bank investing in these.

Money isn't much of a problem... The availability for all users is. Blizzard doesn't ship to many countries, so how are we supposed to get these things?

Im sure they would be avaliable via 3rd parties, such as Amazon etc.
