DaDude
I have a Samsung Blu-ray player and lately, it has been giving me a few issues. Looks like compatibility issues. I had it for 8 months. I currently have a $100 Amazon gift card and a $100 American Express gift card and was wondering if I should use it get a PS3. Not only have I heard that it's such a stable player, but I heard it's a great gaming machine as well. Was never much of a gamer, but hey, maybe there are a couple of games I can get that'll be fun to play. My only beef is that with the $200 off, it'll cost me a total of $126.61 (tax included). Still sounds like a lot. Of course, since one of my gift cards is Amex, I'll have to buy myself a $126.61 gift card and charge it since Amex gift cards don't let you exceed their balances. So, is it wise for me to buy a PS3? Will it be obsolete anytime soon? Like...will a PS4 come out soon? Is a price drop expected soon? Is it something that really is worth all this money? Is it worth buying to replacing my older unstable standalone player, which happened to cost me $180? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Is it worth buying to replacing my older unstable standalone player, which happened to cost me $180? 1) Not for 4 - 6 years. 2) No, it only dropped to $300 after not having a price break in a while. Sony is losing money on each console sold so another price cut would be hurtful to their bottom line. 3) Completely subjective. Personally, I think it's worth the money. I got mine when it was $400, I use it for games and streaming movies from my PC using PS3 Media Server. 4) Yes, future firmware upgrades will ensure you'll be able to play new Blu-ray movies. TAZMINATOR
It's up to you. Now, I have 2 xbox 360s. 1 of them has 120gb and other has 250gb. I keep both of them. I may get PS3 at later date once I have moved out. I sold my PS2 about 3 months ago. My friend has xbox, xbox 360, PS3, and will get Wii soon. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted January 10, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 10, 2010 No price drop is coming soon I would say. As far as being a stable Blu Ray player, I have never had a single issue playing any BluRays at all. Especially if you have it connected to the internet. Also keep in mind, with this free software PS3 Media Server, you can EASILY stream music movies and photos from your PC to your PS3, so it will also turn into a media center as well. Plus there are a decent amount of games out for it now, so even if you are not a big gamer, I am sure you will find one or two that interest you. So if you want a Blu Ray player that can also be a Media Server and that you can play games on if you choose, then Yes, definitely get the PS3 and it is well worth it IMO. tiagosilva29
The IPv6 issue is addressable with a firmware update. Go for it.

Did you even bother reading that this is mainly for playing Blu Rays and the games were secondary?

hotdog666al
Yeah it's a pretty cool console. I personally find the 360 having a superior game range, but that's over-shadowed by how great the PS3's media facilities are! (Our 360 is also like 4x as loud, haha)
DaDude
Before you make a big purchase, have you looked for firmware upgrades for your current player? Yes, and the newer updates are terrible. I experienced sooo many *additional* problems that I had to downgrade back to an older firmware to get this player back into a semi-stable condition. Looks like Samsung is not testing their newer updates before releasing them. Heh! What a mess, ain't it? Maybe buying that PS3 ain't such a bad idea after all. Thanks for all the input, guys! AbandonedTrolley
In your situation, looking for a blu ray player the PS3 is an ideal purchase for yourself. The machine is pretty much future poof and with the console side also means it tends to run faster than most bluray players too. As mentioned it aso makes an amazing media centre too. Not too sure what I would do without mine tbh, it's used pretty much every day, be it for gaming or media :)
buckboii
Ya especially with the new PS3 and controllers wow. its a bargin actually, i have the old ps3 and the controller and the console itself is meh. the look is sleek but i dont think sturdy and the controller so light you feel like tossing it. and its easily breakable so ya. I think you should.
V-Tech
I bought my PS3 alittle more than a week ago. I have to say that i have no idea why i waited so long to buy it. It's just amazing. The blueray player is great and i heard that it will last for a long time. I play few games now and the look of them are just great and it's really fun to play online. My wife didnt think that she will have any use for it but with so many family games for it (like BUZZ Trivia and Monopoly) she is actually playing PS3 :D For you, you are looking to buy a new blueray player anyway so why not go ahead and buy the best system for the value.
