Ethernet Adapter

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if the 10/100 Ethernet adapter is upgradeable to a 10/100/1000 adapter. I know its not upgradeable by any conventional manner, I was just wondering if anyone has done it with a DIY type method or has heard of it being done with or without specific instructions as I would like to upgrade. Thanks.

Why do this on a 360? There is literally no internet service provider that I know of that has speeds even approaching the gigabit speed. Even if you were doing it to stream your own stuff the 360 will only process data so fast so again its no point in doing this its not going to make online play or streaming better.

I'm not sure what it would possibly achieve. You can't copy files to the internal HD over the network and even high bitrate 1080p streams perfectly over 100mbit, so what exactly would gigabit do for an Xbox 360 even if it was possible?

I think what would be even more useful would be a generic brand wireless adapter for the 360. I'm sorry but 60-80 dollars for a Wireless adapter is far too over priced considering the price of a PC USB adapter. I wire my 360 at home, but if I go to my girlfriends, I have to bring my laptop so I can share its wireless with the 360.

And hopefully one day Microsoft gets some sense and puts Wireless in themselves.

They won't, especially seeing as though the JUST released there Wireless-N adapter. It is still BS that you can't use your own adapter, however....

But why use wireless? its awful for online play. You easily get lag. Its just better to always go wired for this kind of thing. Previously I had issues because my tv was downstairs away from my modem but I got powerline ethernet and I dont have any issues. Its awsome for gaming.

Wireless isn't "awful" for online play...ESPECIALLY if you have the new Wireless-N adapter/router. I had the Wireless-G adapter, and cheap D-Link router. Didn't have any lag at all with that, in any of the games I used....

I was more curious as to see if anyone had done it.. and was slightly worried that 1080p content would not stream all that well and I wanted options in case it didn't.

Also.. as to using your own generic adapter.. you could essentially use a wireless bridge as that is what I have been doing until I just finished running wire through the place yesterday. I was using a Linksys WET54G wireless bridge.

Ohh and one more thing about a wireless bridge.. you can pair that with a switch and essentially provide all your network devices with a wireless connection to your network.. hence the term.. wireless bridge. But that could include your DVD player.. media PC.. gaming consoles.. w/e.

1080p content will stream absolutely fine over 100mbit. Some basic calculations show that 100mbit is nowhere near being saturated. Say an average HD movie is 15GB and is 1 hour 45 minutes long - it's usually far less than that, but take that as a bad case scenario. That equates to 146MB per minute which is 2.34MB per second and 19.5Mbit. You'd be using 1/5th the bandwidth ;)
