PS3 Gets Fried In Mysterious HDMI Blaze

What the hell happened here? Needless to say, it took a pretty violent incident to do this kind of damage.

HDMI Fire

Speaking about his friend's PS3, our tipster writes:

He had his PS3 plugged into an electrical source although it wasn't running any games at the time of this. He plugged in his Psyclone HDMI cable from his Samsung 32-inch flatpanel tv to the PS3 when the sparks started flying. A flame actually shot up out of the PS3, and sparks were firing out of both ends where the HDMI cable met with the ports. The mess ended in 10 seconds when the cord melted off. Pictures included. We cannot figure out why/how this occurred. No breakers were tripped, no damage or discoloration to any wall outlets or other power sources. Only the HDMI ports.

We've seen our fair share of flaming laptops, cellphones and iPods?but this is the first time I have come across an HDMI fire. Unless there were fireworks strapped to the cable, this one is a mystery

Holy crap... how much current does HDMI have, lol. It feels like it is a wiring problem, but like, sparks I would imagine be normal if it is wired wrong, but like goes up in flames. Would it be possible the cable is very fire conductive so that once the sparks happen it ignite the cable?

it seems like both tv and the ps3 got fried. wonder which one was faulty? Also, based solely on the power that hdmi cable carry, this is not possible. either someone was trying to screw around with something or i call BS as well.

I work at a radio shack and we sell plenty of samsungs, I have seen similar HDMI problems like this before. In the last year and a half we have been having plenty of bad samsung tvs to deal with, I guess they are going though the big company disease right now.

5V and 500mA is actually a lot of current, that's about 2.5Watts of power. One possibility is one of the cable pin outs were not wired correctly and as a result 5V was probrably shorted to ground.

Try taking a 1.5V battery and connect one end of the battery ("+") to a 3ohm (rated 1/4Watt) and the other to the "-" and see what happens. See how fast the resistor changes color and feel it afterwards.

Gizmodo .. known for "QUALITY (Y) :D" reporting.

They don't even research like Fish did.

I hate Gizmodo. They take things from other websites and credit back to them after four or five of their own websites get hits. It's a way how for them to get even more revenue..

They also steal articles.

Considering that a lot of PS3 owners are reporting their GPUs getting fried from using the HDMI, I believe it.

I HIGHLY doubt that's possible.

The PS3 has a GPU based on the nVidia 7800 GTX. NVidia recommends at least 350 watts to run the 7800 GTX.

You'd have to do some serious over-powering to have it output enough power to fry the 7800 chip in the PS3.

This is the first time im my life I've ever seen anything like this from any HDMI enabled product (let alone console), so I have no idea if you posted this whilst sleeping, or your arse likes to post sometimes.
