Leave new HDD in for service?

Recommended Posts

So my MacBook Pro died again, and I'm taking it in for service tomorrow. About two weeks ago, my friend helped me replace the 160GB drive with a 500GB drive. Should I put the original drive back in before I take it in? I can't really find a definitive yes or no answer anywhere.

I would put the original part back in, as you don't know what parts the technicians will swap out under the repair.

Radish?

If it is a unibody model, leave the hard drive in. It is considered a user-replaceable part and Apple will not swap it out for a different one. If you have a pre-unibody model, put the old hard drive back in. The hard drive is not considered user-replaceable and it is possible that you may run into problems depending on who looks at your machine.

I have a non-unibody MacBook pro and I replaced the 160GB hard drive with a 500GB one like you. It had to go in for service recently and I had given the 160GB one to someone else so I had to just take it in with the 500GB in. They didn't mention it and fixed it under Apple care f.o.c.

I suppose it must vary with who looks at it though.

When I took it in yesterday, the guy asked if I had upgraded the RAM or hard drive, so maybe I would've been okay. Just to be on the safe side though, I put the old one back in. Thanks for your help guys. :)
