So need some app recommendations :P

Recommended Posts

So I'm pretty much know what I use on Windows and Linux now I need a set for OS X...

so I need replacements...

  • Development:
  • Notepad++, I'm personally going to go with TextMate as I've used it before :)
  • msysgit, it's a GUI frontend and installer for Git on Windows. I would prefer a GUI not just the gitk that comes with git. This is a must!
  • TortoiseSVN, an SVN Client, I'll need one but not as badly as the above.
  • putty, I'm pretty sure OS X includes the ssh command line app right?
  • WinSCP, I have no idea here, I would prefer an SCP client over an FTP client... (I've just gotten so used to using WinSCP that I got lazy)

I use Quicken for my fiances and I'll need something to replace that..

Now whats the consensus on Office:Mac 2008, is it good is it better to go with iWork?

Is anything like Alcohol 52% needed for mounting or is that built in?

Burning software... I use Nero 9 on Windows... what about Mac?

Oh yes no need to mention bootcamp, but that's only if I'm desperate :p

I would definitely recommend going with Coda to replace Notepad++. Although Textmate is really nice as well. I've also played around with CSS Edit + Espresso

To replace putty, you can easily just use terminal that's included with OSX.. That's what I use right now although I'd take suggestions from other people as well. :)

Versions for SVN.

Textmate (or BBEdit)

GitX

Versions

Terminal (built-in)

Transmit

There are no good Office suites for Mac imo, Office 2k8 is probably best among them.

Mounting and burning is built-in.

If you're willing to part with cash, BetterZip is your best bet for the only decent Archiver on OS X.

All the others have features missing. You won't find an archiving app which can open split files, open all password protected files, view archives without extracting, and create archives.. all in one app.

Except that one. :p

^ unarchiver can :p

Unarchiver just unpacks archives (hint: the name of the app :p), it won't let you create archives, and it also has trouble opening most password-protected files.

Unless it's changed.

Since no one bothered to answer you about Quicken, you'll be pleased to know that there is a version for the Mac as well. Moving files from the Windows to the Mac version (and vice versa) can be a pain though, unless they've changed it in the last couple of years. I haven't used the Mac version in a while.

There is a new version coming out next month, the previous version is 2007: http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/mac-personal-financial-software.jsp

Haven't had any issues here.

Next to that the Unarchiver is a free application. If it turns out it isn't adequate no harm and you can always look at other (paid) applications.
