The years-in-the-making Gran Turismo 5 has been delayed. The game was slated for release this March in Japan, but publisher Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that the game's release date is now TBA.

In an official release, Sony stated the release date will be announced at a later date. The company also apologized for any trouble that this delay has caused.

GT5 was first announced at the E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles back in 2006. According to GT series creator Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo 5 has cost $60 million to make. The game will feature over 1,000 automobiles and 20 different locations.

The game was playable in 3D at the recent CES show in Las Vegas. Sony previously announced it was shooting for "Summer 2010" for a Western release. No word on how this delay will impact those plans.

Hmmmmm not too sure how legit this is, but quite annoying still......

I'll probably be a matter of months or even a few weeks. Perhaps jsut reassessing the release window for maximum impact on release? Worldwide release perhaps?

I didn't think GT5 had been delayed a first time, let alone delayed a second.

But I thought I read earlier somewhere that it was only a delay of month, and some other place said it was 2-3 months.

Either way, probably a better release window later in the year than these next few months that is filled with games that were delayed from last year.

at this point they can just throw a 6 on it call prologue 5 and honestly get away with it because of how often it is pushed back.

SCEE: GT5 EU date “in due course,” JP delay “only applicable for the Japanese market”

SCEE has told VG247 the Gran Turismo 5 delay announced this morning is “only applicable for the Japanese market.”

The company added that the Polyphony racer’s EU date will appear in its own good time.

A SCEE rep told us: ”This information on the GT release is only applicable for the Japanese market. SCEE will announce the launch date for this game in the PAL territories in due course.”

The game was given a March release back at Tokyo Game Show last year. After today, it’s TBA.

Worldwide release, could even still be March but as I said April, putting my bets on it as it avoids God of War 3 hitting in March. As much as GoW3 is still a more Western game, releasing it and GT5 in Japan at the same time is still bad marketing to maximize sales of each.

Sony's Q1/Q2 is ridiculously packed.

edit: Cue the whiners and moaners, most probably not even owning PS3s. It'll hit March still or just after, clearly just prepping for Worldwide release with SCE putting pressure on SCEJ cause there's no way they'd release GT5 and GoW3 in same month (SCE wouldn't, but SCEJ seemed willing to). All about the marketing, as GT5 will decimate any other Sony owned IP in the month it's released.

Unless you're Japanese I'd have no idea why you'd be worried in this topic, we all knew we were getting it 1~2 months later anyway (English speakers).

Surely there would be a knock-on effect?

Unless it's delayed for development no, and it's most likely marketing with GoW3 coming out in March.

Did they just forget they have Forza 3 to be worried about?

More like they don't care and they're making their own game to their own standards and considering the best time to release.

Both games are on separate systems, not like they're directly competing on sales, in which GT5 will anilhate Forza 3 anyway.

It's simply marketing, how is it even sane to release God of War 3, a AAA title and GT5, another AAA title in the same month? One's going to suffer from that, and it's GoW3, GT is a huge franchise, one of the biggest in the gaming industry, no other game will outsell it on the PS3 this generation. Not unless they remake FF7.

Yup, if GT was that huge it wouldn't need moving. Might be best to wait and see what the actual cause of the delay is before assuming and defending it all. GT is bigger than GoW, if anything, GoW would get moved.

God of War has always been released in March though.

GT5 was never coming in March for EU/US (we knew that already) as GoW3 is a bigger western game, but I think SCEJ have finally realized even although GoW3 might not be as popular over in Japan, it's still silly releasing two AAA titles in the same month.

Push the Japanese date to whatever SCE and SCEA are considering and you have a worldwide release.

No it hasn't, not in Japan! Remember, we are talking about Japan here, please stop bringing up EU/US markets.

Can I borrow your crystal ball? :p

Big difference from install base last gen to this gen. It's not a given just because past sales were large they will be forever more. I thought you did a business course man lol.

I'm sure hardcore GT5 fans will suck it up and see it only as a positive.

Reports are that the delay is happening to allow Sony to do a simultaneous release...this would undoubtedly please fans :)

Just going on my own world of friends and colleagues, I know more people with Xbox 360's than I do PS3's - and certainly those that were holding out for GT5 before buying a PS3 gave up and bought an Xbox with Forza 3.. myself included. I was a long time Gran Turismo fan and owned every version on every previous version of the PlayStation but no concrete release date and the strength of the Forza franchise drove me away!

Did you see month 1 Forza NPDs? Less than 200k I think.

GT5 Prologue will outsell Forza 3 most likely, it's already at 4.17 million sales.

I bet my Neowin account on GT5 outselling Forza 3, are you really trying to tell me you think Forza will reach 9-15 million?

No it hasn't, not in Japan! Remember, we are talking about Japan here, please stop bringing up EU/US markets.

You're not seeing my point, GT5 could've done a March release here if it weren't for GoW3.

In Japan they don't see GoW3 as big a title so said they'd go ahead with it, but it's still stupid to release two AAA titles in the one month. Looks like SCEJ have realised that and are just going to push ahead with a worldwide release slightly later.

In 4 days, yes. It's already at 2 million. Nice try though.

I hope you are being sarcastic.

And?

GT5 is going to be huge, content wise it's going to blow people away - How can you not predict that even just based on amount of cars/tracks. With touches like head tracking you know PD are going all out.

I think it might even reach GT3 numbers, the amount of hype and effort going into it are crazy, it'll move PS3s like a fat kid chows down a pack of doughnuts and much of the 30m current install base will buy.

I guess that just "annoys", "frustrates", or "frightens" those that can't stop yabbering about Forza in every GT thread like it even stands a chance of being as big.

ps. Show me a Forza title hitting more than 4 million, Forza 2 did around 2.7 million I believe. The "GT Demo" as everyone liked to flame it as back in the day reached over 4 million.

GT has a massive marketing advantage over Forza due to its name. Lets face it, the marketing guys know their stuff and its gonna sell. I know countless people who bought PS2's for GT, it will be the same this generation.
