I'm questioning whether or not to pick this up on release. I really did enjoy the betas. I'm sure I won't have to be downloading a 3GB patch every other week once the game is final, which was my only gripe with the betas. But I'm so damn backlogged on games. This is one of the few games I was able to play for like 6 hours straight though. Really great game as long as you have a good team going.

I will be renting it through Gamefly week of release, already have a queue spot open and waiting so I will have it. I did not play much of the Beta because I enjoyed it, and I tend to stay away from Beta's as to not get bored of the real thing so easily.

Larry, I understand that you didn't enjoy Mass Effect but you should really give the second one a try.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of the SOCOM hardcore fans on there...

Why would "SOCOM Hardcore Fans" players some tatty arcade shooter? The 'realism' gamers tend to kinda go in a massive arch around crap like this.

Yeah I just read recently about how supposedly they made the FPS combat even more fluid with ME2, so maybe. I just dont know.

Well for starters, perhaps they will not think it is tatty (I had to actually look that up) and their opinion will differ from yours, and secondly, because Socom right now is not all that good and perhaps they are looking for something a little different? I think this game has a better chance of getting the Socom crowd than the MW2 on the PS3, that is for sure.

You do know there's a Beta going on, so the players can try out the game. Also, the "Socom" crowd isn't just Socom-exclusive players, it's a term used for players who enjoy games with focus on realism and teamwork and they mainly reside on the PS3, there are other games than Socom that manages to do that, so I'm sure anyone who like that sort of game and can't get their kicks through Socom, will go somewhere else. The only thing this game has to do with "Socom" is the developer, which may catch the interest of a few but I believe most people have enough sense to not make that a deciding factor and will actually see this game for what it is, some sort of experiment with tons of players that, not surprisingly also took a toll on the engine and everything else.

Because Zipper made this game in lieu of the latest SOCOM, and I would imagine that the focus on strategy and teamwork would appeal to them the same group. I would hope that this game in it's final form would perform gameplay-wise as well as the older SOCOM games.

There's more to Socom games than just teamwork and strategy, you can get that by playing any half-arsed multiplayer game with the right people these days.. That sort of players also want a game that manages to be realistic and focus on real-life aspects - I know because I'm one of them, I'm not a Socom player because the game is on a platform I'm not frequently using so I'm obviously playing games on the platforms I use but as I said, the term Socom players is just the "Mil-sim players" on the PS3. No MAG has nothing on anything, it's just an arcade shooter.

And no Mil-sim player would play a game purely because of the developer or because it has a bit of teamwork, there's ton of other aspects, features and possibilities that need to be in place as well. MAG will just be another FPS in their mind.

Sethos how much of the beta did you play?

Very difficult in my mind to call MAG an Arcade shooter, and Arcade shooter to me is COD/Halo, something you can lone wolf and "pwn" a leader board all yourself.

Teamwork is undoubtedly essential in MAG, which is why I put it down a bit as it's something I'd expect to work better on a PC than consoles, props to Zipper for trying, but coordinating 128 console tards even if you are broke down into units of 8 is some task.

The only thing arcady about the game is the med kit stuff. But I did think it was more believable than the Wolverine regen that's popular in all the common FPS games of today.

I really liked how it was a constant battlefield. You would have to take a point and then defend it, as the opposing side could always take it back. Squad leaders have to coordinate with other squad leaders in order to effectively cover ground. It's something you don't see on this scale in any game today.

Yep I am well aware there is an open Beta. And I also know who the Socom crowd is, and again I personally think that a decent amount of the Socom crowd will gravitate to this. Even if it does not fully satisfy their needs, which it will not, I really think a decent amount of them will go to this game because of their loyalty to Zipper, and not only that, I think not all of them absolutely HAVE to always play a Socom game, and I personally do not think this game is arcadey as you say it is. It is definitely not a Socom game, no argument from me there, but I also do not think it is a MW2 either.

Played enough to see, this game has nothing to do with a proper tactical shooter. I also think you might be confusing the 'Socom' crowd a bit, they are basically just tactical games just like me who enjoys games with realism, focus on military authenticity mostly and some proper teamwork. Teamwork however is not the main pull for that sort of games, that just has to be an integral part of the game besides the other stuff I mentioned - Teamwork shouldn't become a mentioned feature per say for that type of gamer, teamwork and heavy use of tactics is just a basic requirement.

So no, just because a game sports essential features doesn't mean it'll start converting people left and right.

No they won't, purely because the game doesn't fulfil requirements set by the "Socom crowd" which is basically a term used for tactical gamers on the PS3, a sad title because Socom is the only game that fills the tactical spot. Yes, some may go check it out purely due to the lack of proper teamwork oriented games but I will bet you, all of the true tactical gamers will stop playing again very quickly purely because the game has none of the other basic features tactical gamers want.

This game will probably be somewhat popular, by PS3 standards and get some decent scores but I, as a tactical gamer myself know it doesn't satisfy my tactical gaming needs and I doubt many other tactical gamers will feel any different.

Hopefully the above makes any sense, going through Windows 7 Desktop Technician Certificate course these days and it's really heavy stuff, my brain is mush at the end of the day
