I got both the workgroups names the same..and I have sharing on 1 folder called downloads on the win2000 side...I'm tryin to transfer files to that side..of the comp.. (it's a laptop) since it doesnt have a cd rom...

What is the name of the machine. Just becuase they do not show up in your Network Places workgroup machines. You are clicking on the view workgroup machines?

Anyway - just because it is not listed yet, does not mean you can't get to it. it can take awhile for names to show up here, since there has to be an election on who is the going to be the master browser, etc.. And if not on the same subnet, you may never see if not running wins, etc.. etc.. There are many reasons why machines will not show up in your workgroup listing.

do a start, run, and type \\computername

xp comp is named - anomaly

2000 (laptop) named - squinta

workgroup - mshome

I tried that "\\computername"

and got a message saying

network path not found.....

================

the drives I wanted shared are... but I'm gonna try adding another network place..see if that works...

I have this problem every once in awhile on my network at home. If they do not show up in the main network neighborhood window, try using the search option and type in the name of the computer. I can usually get to the system in question with no problem using this method.

---------------------------------

two things worth checking (both were issues for me whem i was networking) make sure you dont have any free firewalls running (i.e ZoneAlarm/Sygate) as unless you have a working network set up before you install they are a bitch and wreck your networking. Even close any other firewalls (norton etc) if that still doesn't work.

second is that it could be a NIC problems especially check the IQR setting on the XP machine, this was causing problems for me. Not that on the XP machine the only way you can fix a shared IQR is by changing the PCI slot the NIC is in.

i would also suggest losing netbios on the 2000 machine as it may be causing conflicts.

Use consequent IP addresses on both machines. E.g.:

XP

IP address 192.168.0.1

Subnet 255.255.255.0

2000

IP address 192.168.0.2

Subnet 255.255.255.0

Obviously if you have a router with an IP address of 192.168.0.1, set the computers addresses consequently. ;)

Another thing. Check in the advanced properties of your network connection in XP if the firewall is enabled, if it is, disable it.

If you still can't see the machines, try to ping them. If they work, use a UNC path as \\192.168.0.X, where the X stands for the machine you want to see. If you still can't see them, drop me a PM and I'll help you. :)

i disagree with the above post (not saying it wont work its just i tried that when i had this problem and it didn't work for me). you should set the win 2000 machine to set the IP when it get connected to the network... thats the only way i could get it to work for me.

That's because there's probably something messed up with your configuration. There are absolutely no differences between setting a static IP or setting the IP with a DHCP (which surely your router casts).

I'll double check that if in you. :)
