3D games

nvidia makes a product that allows you to play most game in 3D, you need a high end computer and a 120hz screen aswell

Well, are you telling me that I can play any game in 3D mode if I have these things?! I have a 3D glasses, My nvidia card is 1 G.B. 9600 GT, LCD 19" Samsung screen, max resolution (1440 * 900)

you'll need driver support for that game too, but otherwise, yeah the 3d data already exists in the computer..... as opposed to a movie, which is just a series of 2d images...

You'll need special glasses, a 120 Hz 3D-capable monitor and, in my opinion, a faster NVIDIA video card than you have.

The 9600GT is the bare minimum which supports Nvidias 3D tech.

But you need a high end 120Hz monitor also, and at least some kind of Core 2 Duo CPU or equivalent. I could not recommend trying 3D at this moment in time.

My 8600GT supports the 3D stuff, all you have to do is render twice as fast as normal from two different camera positions, it isn't a hardware thing it's a driver thing.

nVidia sent me over a whole kit to evaluate including their 3D Vision kit, a 240hz 3D ready monitor, and a GTX 295.

Anyway, the results were mixed. I got a bit of a headache playing games but I was surprised at how well it worked.

For instance, Sins of a Solar Empire looked amazing on it and so did Demigod.

The problem, however, was in terms of playing. With Demigod, I kept wanting to move the mouse into the screen (it's hard to explain) because of the depth of field I got. With Sins of a Solar Empire, it looked amazing but it was harder to play because the computer readouts are close (i.e. think Z of 0) whereas the ships may be very far away.

I think with some tweaking it could look great but I still got a headache very quickly. By contrast, I saw Avatar at the movies and it was a great experience and no headache.

I'm still messing with it so I'll report more soon.

Sins of a Solar Empire when I tried it looked really terrible in 3d when I tried to adjust the convergence. (Ctrl F6) It made the backround move so far out it wasn't visible on the screen, so I had just had black behind my planets. Sins of a Solar Empire is rated Not Reccomended. If you try a 3D vision ready game like Batman or Resident Evil (or even a game rated Excellent), you should find you get less eyestrain/better 3D.

I'd really appreciate it if Stardock started making(or partnership like SoaSE) 3D Vision ready games. 3D could be another thing on the long list of stuff you do really well.

the headache would be caused by your brain getting confused.... between the lenses in your eyes moving to focus on your screen, and both your eyes pointing in parallel as if seeing something far away, it doesnt know what to decide

i have a pair of reading glasses here which i use to stop myself from getting nearsighted from staring at the screen too long... makes the screen look bigger and further away... they would help mitigate some of the headache

or you could just sit further away from the screen... in principle, a space game should benefit the most from being viewed in 3d, like being able to directly see how the different objects are spatially related... unless the game has used some tricks and stuff which makes it incompatible with 3d

i think you can get anaglyph mode on lots of games (once they are patched)... get your glasses ready, here it is on quake:

but yeh, i'm looking forward to the other 3d technologies in gaming

  • 2 months later...

Does anyone know what sort of performance hit your get when using 3D vision? I'm thinking of buying a 3D monitor and have a Geforce 9800GT and a Core 2 Quad. (Most) games are nice and smooth with (almost) all settings on full, so I'd not want to change this. I'm guessing when you use 3D vision it's not as straight forward as just halving the games performance.
