+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 14, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted January 14, 2010 Sony Computer Entertainment today brings word that it is now possible to digitally record terrestrial broadcasts with a new dedicated peripheral called "torne". The torne is a terrestrial digital tuner that connects to the PS3 via USB cable. Torne offers players an easy and colorful interface that lists programs. It's possible to look up programs and search the menu by genre or keyword. Using a timer, it's also possible to record in advance, and torne automatically records when the console is on stand-by or even while games/DVDs/Blu-rays are running. Besides recording directly to the PS3's hard drive, the torne can be used to record to an external hard drive as well. There is a "search search" function for recorded programs. Torne gives viewers internet capabilities, while viewing recording, allowing them to search the internet. Priced at ?9,980 (US$109), torne will go on sale this March in Japan. The peripheral will also be bundled with the 250GB PlayStation 3 and available for ?42,800 (US$467). A limited quality of these bundles will be available at launch. This latest product is not to be confused with another Sony product, the much smaller PlayTV, which is Sony Europe's HDTV tuner & recorder. It has been available in Europe since fall 2008. DPyro
Remember that PS3 DVR add-on that Sony is releasing in Japan? Apparently they've added a feature that should entice the most trophy-hungry of fans. That's right, they've added trophy support to it.The add-on, called Torne, will apparently reward owners with the "Master of Final Episodes" trophy once they've watched enough final TV show episodes. Andriasang reports that this is from the latest issue of Famitsu. No word on further trophy support, though. The same Famitsu issue also included the following feature list for the DVR add-on: * Full High Vision Viewing and Recording * EPG Compatibility * Subtitle Broadcast Compatibility * Dual language compatible * Can write PSP data * Compatible with PSP remote play * Fast view playback * Visual scene search * Surf the net while viewing * Torumiru view (a means of checking the viewing trends of other viewers) * Trophy Functionality * And more... Sony hasn't said anything about bringing Torne outside Japan, but those who just have o have it can import it when it comes out this March. Huleboeren
Its for the greater good though, MPEG4 AVC > MPEG2 Yup, my country is switching to MPEG4 in 2012 and cutting off the MPEG2 signal So straight MPEG4 from there on We should just have switched to mpeg4 directly since we switched to mpeg2 so late :s

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 23, 2010 Author Subscriber² Share Posted January 23, 2010 (edited) For some reason, this picture makes me want to eBay my PS3 phat and buy a slim. The slim looks slick in this photo. Slim is much nicer than the fat, especially in person. Other than aesthetics though, unless you want Bravia Sync or the ability to bitstream HD audio there's no need to change. But it is shocking how much power the 1st generations PS3s used compared to the Slim, around 3x as much in most scenarios, I have a chart image somewhere, but I can't find it right now. edit: found it

The power alone might end up paying off in the long run (and saving some trees for those tree huggers). I don't mind if I can bitstream finally (would be nice on my new Denon), but it's not a priority. Mostly because I always seem to want the latest and greatest in my home theater. Expensive hobby (though not as expensive as collecting cars :))
