Network printing

Okay I got me first problem :o

How do I print from my Mac to my printer thats connected to my Windows 7 Desktop, the normal ways aren't working...

I'm read about using Bonjour for Windows to Mac printing but not the reverse... Am I correct in assuming it'll work both ways?

The printer is a Lexmark x5070

I've had similar problems with my MBP printing on the printer connected to my girlfriends Win 7 laptop.

It wasn't finding it in the conventional 'Windows' section on Add Printer.

So rightclicked next to the Windows icon there and selected Customise Toolbar. Then added 'Advanced' to the toolbar.

Using the Advanced section, select Type: Windows, then use the direct samba URL for your shared printer.

You can then hopefully find the appropriate driver for your printer model.

Hi!

Thanks for the info, because I feel like i'm closer to a solution. My MBP installed the printer correctly, but now when I send a print job I have a message "Authentication Required". I can't figure out how I can either remove this requirement from my Windows 7 box or add the required authentication credentials to my MBP. I have no problem with file sharing...

Thanks for your help!

is your Windows 7 desktop set up to share files and printers? If so just click on the printer and share it.

And yes I have it set up that what as I still use XP and Vista on my network...

It's still can't find it even though I can connect to my Desktop and access files but the printer is a no go...

okay I get NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER when using the lexmark 5000 series driver version 10.6.1 (thats the latest driver)

It might have to do with the Homegroup security. I find even trying to look at shared files on a Win 7 computer you have to log in.

I am logged in (via samba) to my windows user account (just like i do for XP and Vista)...

I like the requirement to login for files but not for printers...lol. I'm mess with it some more tonight. Hopefully get it figured out. (Not that I ever need to print anything these days).

That's interesting. I always thought samba printer shares didn't require any authentication. It might be worth checking your printer sharing properties on Windows 7. (Just going from previous experience with File Sharing in Windows 7, make sure not only is the printer 'Shared' to 'Everyone', but also that 'Everyone' has permission to use it in the Security tab too.)

Windows added a requirement to log in to a user with a password to use network printing in Vista >.< it's a PITA...

Here is how it is setup on my girlfriend's laptop (enjoy the lovely pink aero theme :p )

print2.jpgprint1.jpg

The Windows 7 laptop is not part of a Homegroup, but has the sharing options such that File and Printer Sharing is enabled etc...

Interestingly, my MacBook Pro rarely see's the Win7 laptop as a Bonjour Computer (in Finder Sidebar) but connects fine as a samba server. Whereas, when back at my house I can see my house mates' Vista laptops on the Sidebar fine :s

Hope this helps.

Seeing Windows 7 moved to a newer version of NTLM. OS X has great trouble connecting to shared printers. The fix is below, hope it helps.

  1. Run Regedit (on Windows PC)
  2. Set the following Registry key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel” to “1”
  3. Restart computer after change

*If the key isn't present, you'll then need to create it as a DWord.

I'm trying this right now...

Update: Still nada... :'(

Thats unfortunate, I setup two shared printers in Windows 7 and OS X (10.6) can connect to both. Is the Mac WINS workgroup setting the same as the Windows PC? (System Preferences > Network > Advanced > WINS).

Thats a shame +FusionOpz, as I'm currently at a loss to the actual problem causing the issue. I have assumed you've setup and shared the printer correctly in Windows 7. Just one final question, do you see any printer listed in the Windows tab under Add Printer (System Preferences > Print & Fax > + symbol > Windows tab)?

Or you could try manually adding the shared printer by;

  1. Selecting Finder
  2. Click the Go menu > Connect to Server
  3. type in: smb://<workgroup>/<server>/<printer sharename>

* Should you have any spaces in the address, replace each one with a "%20" (without quotation marks).

The thing is Finder should see my Windows 7 box shouldn't it?

And no connecting that way doesn't work :s

I can connect to my Windows box by smb://servername/foldername but not the way you suggest :s

The Finder sidebar will show shared computers under the section "Shared". Unless you've set the Finders preferences not to show Connected servers & Bonjour computers (Finder menu > preferences > Sidebar tab). Or the Windows box is not allowing others to see it or lastly the other 1% is Finder having a bad hair day and hasn't refreshed the Shared list.

Seeing OS X connects to Windows shares using SMB for both folders and printers the NTLM version isn't the problem, as you can successful connect to a folder share. I unfortunately don't have an answer.
