Just got RROD on my Zephyr console, help.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, well today I got the dreaded RROD on my Zephyr console  . I turned it on, put Bioshock in the tray, waited for it to load, hit continue and it froze on the loading screen. Turned it off, waited for about 20 min, turned it on again and bang, RROD. I unplugged all the cables, put them back in, and sometimes it turns on but it freezes on the menu screen. I noted that the power brick light stays green when it gives the rrod, so it's a hardware problem. I always took good care of it, keeping it ventilated, not playing for more than 3 hours, etc. It never overheated, either. So what might be the problem? Is it dead or there is something I can do? Any help would be nice, thanks.

What's the manuf. date on the back of it? Microsoft provides a 3-year warranty for the 3 red ring and E74 failures. If it's NOT under warranty, check your local craigslist for people who offer red ring fixing.

^ What he said, and be proud your on of the "many" first console owners. Time for you to give in and get an arcade jasper kit. You can play it ALL DAY LONG till the sun dont shine. Doesnt sound like a boeing etc.

I went from a zhpyr jan 06 console to my MW2 console. ****ing beautiful

Have you tried finding out the error code on it?

Xbox Scene has a huge list explaining all of the errors and the following is how you figure it out:

* Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.

* Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.

* The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).

* Release the eject button and press it again.

* The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.

* Release the eject button and press it again.

* The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.

* Release the eject button and press it again.

* The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.

* Release the eject button and press it again.

* The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

If you have no warranty for it now (if it expired) there is a high chance you can easily repair it yourself. My boyfriend has fixed his consoles a couple times when it had E74 & RROD (since they were both out of warranty since they were launch consoles) and now he's got them all working and just fine.

I tried to check the error through Cupcake's link and found out I had the E18:

E18: Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard.

There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips. The other involves re-Heating the chips. DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.

I'm gonna try to find someone to do the fix for me, since I can't afford a jasper box right now (The arcade is around 1000$ here :p). Thanks for the quick responses people.

Fixing the RROD costs about $2 in parts and is usually effective for quite a while.

I revived a launch Xenon system that lasted me another year before it was completely done for.

There's still hope! :D

What exactly costs $2 that will fix the RROD? Last time I checked, it is going to be a little more depending on the parts you need for it, if you own them already or not.

@BreakingBenjamin; I have fixed 3 Xbox 360's since their RROD, which one had the E74 error (launch console) and the other two had the 0020 error. I fixed all three of them by using the heat gun fix, while cleaning motherboard thoroughly and applying artic silver 5. I highly recommend this fix, I could easily fix and ship back to you but since you are in Venezuela you may as well just fix it yourself (cheaper..) plus the whole I don't know you deal.

You will just basically need T8 and T9 torx, small screw driver, heat gun, foil and then I recommend ArtiClean Termal Material Remover and Termal Service Purifer along with Artic Silver 3. There are videos on YouTube on how to take a heat gun to an Xbox 360 motherboard and the areas to cover. Do your research first, I think most people that have some knowledge, research this, the internet and so forth are able to do this type of fix today while being smart and careful.

The screws and washers will cost about $2 for the fix. It personally cost me $0.75 at my local hardware store, but $2-3 is an estimate for anywhere else. And yes it's true it will cost more if you don't have thermal compound, but if you have a computer, you might as well have some laying around anyway.

Well the screw and washer fix isn't even that effective majority of the time and will come back. It most very, very likely is a reheat of the area will actually fix it more than adding screws and washers. This may of worked for you and congrats on it actually working but reheating should actually get rid of the problem for good or for a while (would need to do again).

BreakingBenjamin: If it's an elite it should be less than 3 years old. Maybe only the very first models will just be going out of the 3yr warranty. (They were released in April 2007 US, June 2007 EU). That should give you a few months left on the 3 year red-ring warranty. I'm not sure on Microsofts local policy however, but you should be OK if it's never been opened.

@Sikh - how can you have a Zephyr from Jan 06? There was only the Xenon up until early-2007.
