Xbox 360 or Wii?

Recommended Posts

Hey

I was recommened (by Neowin) to get a console as a present to myself.

Ive played the Wii. I liked Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros Wii. One of the first things I would buy would be a Classic Controller (never tried it though) even though I pretty much have gotten use to playing with the Wii Remote and analog stick. Only one person (me) plays in my house although with the Wii I might get more people to play.

I havent played the Xbox 360. Im DYING to see how the Halo series ends (Havent played Halo 3; Played 1 and 2). I HATE how you have to pay to play multiplayer. If there is a legal workaround to play multiplayer without paying, thanks and post it. I dont really care about the rest of the Gold features. With Natal, it seems Ill get a "Wii type of gameplay" but I wont know until holdays 2010. I dont like that I have to buy a 802.11n adapter as the Wii already has 802.11g. Ive played the Xbox and liked it.

I play with the digital pad. The game for Xbox 360 that most calls my attention RIGHT now is Halo 3. On the Wii, the game that calls my attention right now is unknown.

Homebrew for Wii is great (except lately but I imagine that will be fixed shortly). Homebrew for Xbox 360 is just starting out.

So which should I get and why?

I Personally have a PS3, and although you didn't list it as an option I'd have to at least suggest you take it under consideration. That being said, the 360 and Wii are drastically different consoles. The Wii is $100 less, but it of course has less features. Besides Super Mario and Halo, what kind of games are you interested in? (They really aren't comparable.) If you pick up a 360 and don't want to pay at all, your missing a lot of the experience of the console.

More information is needed in other words.

Considered the PS3. The answer is no :)

Wish I had my Xbox to read the games I had on my HDD. Don't have the cases anymore since I thru them all out :(

I like games with a good single player story. I enjoy online as well. Shooting, adventure and New Super Mario Bros Wii type games I enjoy.

Ask whatever more information is needed :)

God, whatever you do, don't get a Wii. Unless you're 12 and have a house full of brothers.

Why not?

And no, Im not 12 and dont have any brothers/sisters.

There's nothing wrong with getting a Wii. It just depends on what type of gamer you are. I have one and I love it.

Quite simply, the library SUCKS.. bad! You like mario games? Then grab yourself an emulator and knock yourself out with the tons of roms available on the net. I loved mario games like the classics up to the n64 3D version, and bought the Wii mainly as an impulse... biggest mistake ever. You won't help but feel after the first couple days how stale and gimmicky the controls get. Stick to the 360, where at least their digital content is reminiscent of ol'skool performers.

Edit: oops i meant 360.. :shifty:

The Wii online is terrible. Don't even bother. If you want to play online, you gotta go 360. Gold membership is great and you can get a year for $30 (walmart sale) or $35 (amazon).

The 360 has a much bigger library of highly rated games. The Wii has some, but is mostly filled with shovelware.

The 360 also has a ton more features compared to the Wii and a much broader appeal.

I'd say go with an Xbox and get a gold account. The online play is awesome, just the community can be a little annoying sometimes, especiallly in Halo.

I didn't. Just stating a known fact. Quit trolling.

The fact it was mostly a problem with launch hardware and the evolved xbox design is significantly less prone to RROD

Failed to mention that, cant really accuse someone of trolling when it looks like you were doing it.

The RROD's continue. Do a little research.

Read your own links. Red Rings are an extremely rare issue in the new units. Also, how is citing an KB article on how to fix a problem any proof of a current widespred problem?

"On August 28, 2009, SquareTrade published a report saying that "early indications point to the problem abating in 2009", projecting that 1-year failure rates with the Jasper chipsets might be below 4%."

You actually nailed the reason I have a PS3. "Good Single Player Story." Microsoft's main focus is online multiplayer. You'd probably like Mass Effect however.

From your Xbox statement, it sounds like you want to hack your console and play games on your hard drive (legality of that aside, and which is why you probably said No to the yet to be hacked PS3.), You could probably pick up a cheap banned console off ebay since Microsoft has banned Live users who mod their consoles. Either way, your going to get a broken experience on the 360 that way. Most of the exciting features of the console has something to do with Live, and the way I assume you want to go will eliminate that.

There are a lot of Downloadable Titles that if you plan on modding you can forget about. Disc based...

Mass Effect, Halo 3 (wasn't a fan of the single player), Gears of War 1 (wasn't a big fan of 2),

It still happens far more than often. I sent the wrong link initially (the KB article).

Not sure why you are speading false rumors but the RRODs have long been solved in the Xbox 360.

In all fairness to the RROD issue, I don't think the OP ever said that they were necessarily going to buy a new console, which would make the RROD issue a very important factor to consider if buying used, as well as making sure you know beforehand if a used xbox 360 has been banned or not if you plan to use xbox live.

True that. That is something that needed to be pointed out. TY for your post.

There is also apparently a DVD drive issue that has been going around that two of my friends's systems suffered from. Microsoft wouldn't replace their console for free unless it red ringed. I guess that's something else to factor in. Was going to cost them $170 to fix I believe where for $30 more they could go out and get an arcade instead of getting a refurb. ****ty situation never the less.
