Report: No new Half-Life this year

Recommended Posts

Honestly what I think happened is for a long time Half-Life was the gold standard of what an FPS could and should be, and a lot of FPS's could not even come close to it. Then all of a sudden a whole lot of damn good FPS's came out, so Half-Life in turn was no longer as special as it once was.

So I think Valve is taking this time to really see if they can once again raise the bar for what an FPS can and should be. Thing is, not sure if they can do this myself, but if anyone could, it is Valve, so I think the delay is because they are trying to regain their lost dominance of the genre.

Nevertheless, this news is extremely disappointing, was really hoping to have a new Half Life for this Holiday season.

L4D is just the latest fad, HL has taken a back seat because there hasn't been any new content for 2 1/2 years.

I don't know, I don't remember many people (that I know) being excited over HL2, and those that did play it thought it was too easy. Left 4 Dead appeals to a wider audience.

Everyone is probably right and they're too busy with L4D and TF2, but I do wonder if with Half Life, it will be Half Life 3 with a brand new engine, being Source 2 or whatever.. With Direct x 11 support and a true revamp of the Source engine.??

So what was the idea behind episodic content again? Shorter games with a quicker release date?

Sure Valve, sure.

Let's just hope it's a little longer than EP1.

I can wait, it'll be worth it. No doubt it'll blow everything out of the water the season it hits.

Hopefully it wont involve any time being underground, personally I found them the most boring parts of the game and episodes.

Disagree with that, personally. Very few games that get released engross me as much as Half-Life 2 did -- even still.

I do think that Valve is probably making Half-Life 3 instead of Episode Three now, though. They had a nice cliffhanger left on at Episode Two, and with all the time they're taking I'd be amazed if they didn't do a massive overhaul to the engine or make a completely new engine.

Also, in regards to all the Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress comments: those are separate teams. Valve South does Left 4 Dead. A separate team inside Valve (Seattle) works on Team Fortress 2. The teams do sometimes crossover, but I highly doubt that the reason for the delay is those two games, personally.

F*ck Valve and their HL series!

They are no longer a game developer in my eyes. To me they seem way more interested in selling you games on their Steam platform than anything else and it seems to me that they only make games like L4D2 and TF2 is to promote their platform and make you install it on your PC. On the other side of that coin, the Steam platform itself is awesome in my opinion but I also don't see Valve as a game developer anymore but a distro. One day we might get a HL3 but I'm not going to bet the farm on it.

Yeah it was such a relief to get out of that bloody mine cave thing!

Can't see Valve getting rid of the Source engine, the most important factor is how it works for them and it works quite well.

They make the engine for themselves first, other people second, what they want comes first rather than what other people want.
