Buio
They have just released version 5.0.396 as an update. Reading on their forum they say this is a version they hope to solve the problems with BSOD some people had. It is not available as installable download, but it gets updated to 396 trough the update function after install. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54581.
ThePitt
I was testing this new version/release of this av and nothing surprise me. The engine is pretty slow and with a bunch of false positives that could drive you nuts in no time. Despite that some ppl said that this one is faster running/opening process to me its pretty slow compared with 'my' "old" Dr.Web Antivirus. This one is lightweight (it has some memory leaks, I admit that) and faster that you couldnt notice that you are actually running an av. The heuristics compared with avast! is by far better and faster with no false alarms. No BSOD with this Avast v5, yet...

Avast scored "few" in the latest false positives test on av-comp (done with about 23 000 samples) and was one of the best in that regard. So there aren't any other that is much better at that.
