PS3 Hacked?

Recommended Posts

Looks interesting,

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1.

3 years, 2 months, 11 days...thats a pretty secure system

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

even if hacked it's not easy for the average user to do or even worth the time, so whats the point bragging rights i suppose.

This is both good and bad news. I would hope that it would be used for a custom firmware, and backing up BD games to HD, but I would hate to see PS3 games showing up on torrent sites.

If backing up games to HD happens then it is inevitable that ps3 games will show up. Actually they are already ps3 games on warez sites but they are unusable for the time.

5 weeks? He's been working on and off on it for a whole lot longer than that. hehe

Not a chance I'm pirating on the PS3 if it becomes possible, or my new 360 when I get it due to my "backups" clogging up the old one. Tis a sad day when you see your piece of kit kicked off the network soo easily because it's not hard for MS/Sony to detect things.

I especially think it'll be easy for Sony considering one whole SPU is dedicated to security checks, PSN may be free but I use it far too much to get banned from it. I took the risk with the 360 as I wasn't paying to play my games online, or only occasionally, just using it for game/console updates and some XBLA content. I also have a feeling Sony would ban PSN accounts, not just consoles, what do they have to lose you aren't paying them a subscription....

As someone else said this guy still has a long way to go, then him or someone else has to turn the exploit into something that can play backups if that's even possible, we may only get homebrew, but for his age he's talented (if he's telling the truth).

Hes only had the thing for a year, and he only started hacking into it a couple months ago.

The PS3 has not been hacked, at least not mainstream, that is for sure. I suspect we won't have any major hacking of the system during it's normal lifespan. I for one will never hack games or my PS3 to play them. I will always give the developers the money they deserve for making the games.
