Question about PS3 Blu-Ray games/HDD instalation

Recommended Posts

Hey

Today we were going to play a game of COD. He has the game on Blu-Ray but he let his brother borrow the disc. I told him that if he would have installed the game on the HDD, we could play. He then asked the obvious question of wouldnt it be simple to pirate the game. I told him no, it is linked to your PSN ID and only one person could play the game.

Im just wondering how that works and that sort of thing. Thanks :)

What?

You can't install PS3 games to the hard drive and play them, with or without a disc in the first place. Unless it's something off of PSN, but I'm guessing you mean MW2, or do you mean COD Classic on the PSN store?

The PS3 isn't like the XBox. The only games that you can install fully to the HDD are downloaded games from PSN.

Even on the XBox, you still need the disc to play the game.

There are full games downloadable from PSN right? So just insert the game, PSN checks that you have the game inserted and you can download the full game, install it to your HDD and just play off your HDD without the disc.

Of course, this links your disc with your PSN ID/PS3 ID/whatever so it cant be downloaded more than once.

what are the benefits of this if you have the disc anyway, or is it just if something happens to the disc (scratch, break etc) ? i suppose faster loading times but then again its hardly a wait anyway?

Full games downloaded from PSN are paid for via the store and nothing to do with prior purchasing of disc based versions.

Yes there are SOME full retail games available to download from PSN, none of those check for a disk though and currently there are no retail based bluray disc based games that fully install to the hard drive. So no, you can't be playing the same game simulateously from the one disc.

Doesn't GT5p retail disk pretty much install the entire game from the BD disk to the HDD, but still require the disk (but no disk required if game is purchased over PSN obviously). It's my understanding that the install size of GT5p from the retail disk is the same size as the PSN download version of GT5p.

I can't say for sure, as I bought mine over PSN.

I believe it's about a 5 gig install, will check tonight, but there is no option to run direct from the XMB until you put the disc in. So I wouldn't say the game is on the hard drive looking for verification as there is no way to launch it prior to the disc being inserted.

Nah basically all they've done is put the digital version on the disc but make it require a disc check.

It's the same with Socom, it installs to the hard drive like it would from PSN but needs the disc in. Same with Burnout as well.
