Hello, PS3 GTA IV DLC?

Some rumours never die, like the one about "Episodes of Grand Theft Auto IV" for the PS3. They don't die, of course, because somebody keeps kicking up the dust just when we've all forgotten about it. Sure, the Episodes are brilliant (and Gay Tony in particular is a work of art) but we thought Microsoft had this one all sewn up. We'd normally not bother with a story like this, but when a retailer throws up a pre-order page for the disk version of the game on the PS3, well, we take notice. The retailer? SimplyGames. The date: 31st of March. RRP: £34.99. The chance of this being real? No idea, but let's cross our fingers that that box art is real and we find out more tomorrow, eh?

You could understand a mistake like this being made just as the pre-order for the 360 copy going up, but at the end of January 2010?

Taken down indeed, but then this apparently.

Yesterday our friends over at PlayStation Lifestyle reported that SimplyGames.com had a listing which stated the supposed Xbox 360 title Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City would be coming to the PlayStation 3.

Well today, SimplyGames have told Connected Consoles that the additional content for the epic title will be coming to the PS3. They told us;

"We can confirm that the details on our website are correct and that this title will be released on the Playstation 3 in the near future. We have had to remove this title from sale for a short period. As soon as this title is available to pre-order we will email you with all the details so you can get your order placed as soon as possible."

The game has been listed many, many times for PS3 in the past six months, but they turned out to be mistakes. But thankfully, SimplyGames have given PS3 gamers some extra 2010 delight, though we still await official word from Rockstar.

Yep it's confirmed. Here's the press release from Sony:

(Nasdaq: TTWO), PS3 fans will have the opportunity for the first time to experience the last two exciting chapters of the Grand Theft Auto IV saga together on one standalone Blu-ray? disc, or as individual episodes available for download on PlayStation?Network. In the first episode, The Lost and Damned, players will become immersed in the dark underworld of Liberty City and its motorcycle gangs led by Johnny Klebitz and The Lost motorcycle club. Players will follow the shady exploits of Luis Lopez in the second episode, The Ballad of Gay Tony, as he becomes involved in Liberty City's fast-paced, corrupt nightclub scene. Both episodes feature new vehicles, weapons, and music. "Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City has been one of the most requested gameplay experiences by PlayStation fans, and we're thrilled to finally bring the closing chapters of the GTA IV story from one of the biggest franchises in gaming to PS3," said Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations, SCEA. Don't worry, the X360 horde did actually worse with the rumors and hopes of Metal Gear Solid 4 coming to the X360.

Good news for anyone that hasn't played these games, everybody should be able to play them.

But what's up with this exclusivity now? I thought MS had these pinned down and paid good money for it?

MS paid for a timed exclusive.

Correction: MS loaned money for timed exclusivity, the balance of which after sales had to be paid back. Sweet deal for MS -- three+ years of perceived exclusivity (since the announcement), lost no money, and probably moved a ton of consoles as a result.
