Which gaming platform is always ahead in terms of graphics?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was wondering if the PC has always had better graphics then the consoles like the current PS3 and Xbox 360? or have the consoles always had better graphics and we've yet to catch up?

Pc ftw. You can play more games at higher resolutions with more players and the latest pc gfx cards can preform alot better then the 360. Take a look at crysis xD

PC's will always be top of the list in terms of better graphics. It's due to the sheer fact that you can upgrade it when newer models are out for graphic cards.

Console will rarely have major updates to their hardware unless it's an entirely new version (eg: Xbox => Xbox 360). Sure, you might get a new mobo, or other parts but not a major overhaul.

i dont know the actual specs but i have both ps3 and 360 and the graphics look just about the same, but of course pc will always be ahead as you can constantly update the hardware.

PC will always win that one.

And IMO, it's a hands down winner for price, performance, reliability, future-proofing, and the list goes on.

Plus the PC can do so much more ;)

But when the PS3 was released, who had better graphics then? was it the PS3?

Also which graphic card on the pc would you compare PS3's graphics to?

The PC, the PS3 has something equivalent to a 7 series GeForce GPU.

PC is obviously better if you factor out costs but you have to take into account many devs are developing for the consoles first and foremost so while the PC is capable of more you may not actual see any real improvements on the PC depending on whether the port of the game is any good or not.

That said I like it when devs such as Valve create highly scalable games, even if they don't push more current hardware.

You just started the war with that question.

Consoles will NEVER have as good of graphics. By the time the console hits the market there will be new gpus and cpus that are much faster. Consoles are easy for the masses, but if you want graphics the winner is clearly pc.

Really not a battle in anyway, for example the PS3's graphics card is a modified GeForce 7800, putting out about 400 gigaflops. You can buy single cards now putting out over 3000+ gigaflops, slap two of those in and you've got 6000+ gflops vs 400 gflops. Obviously a thousand different comparisons, but there is no argument, since consoles usually use budget PC hardware to keep their price low.

What war? There's no disagreement about the OP's question; the PC platform has the best graphics. He asked nothing about value, controls, game availability, customization, or anything else that might get people over-excited about debating the platforms.

As for consoles NEVER being as good as PCs in terms of graphics: think twice. It won't be long before consoles are, themselves, PCs proper. The only thing preventing that now is cost; that will change as the PC industry shifts to parallel-processing to increase computing power. When that happens, there may or may not be incentive to develop higher-end graphics for dedicated gaming workstations. Time will tell.

I don't know if PCs were always head of consoles in terms of graphics quality/performance, but I do know that was the case since the days of the PS1 and N64. Even with current-gen consoles (PS3 & X360), they were out-dated before they even hit the market. Why? Simply because the GPU's design has to be finalized before production can begin. And once you have hardware locked-in, it ages. The same applies to PC hardware. Fortunately though, you can upgrade your video card and CPU with a PC. That's something you can't do with a console.

PCs have an indestructible advantage over gaming consoles; PCs can be upgraded. While the Xbox 360 and PS3 have great performance due to their sole purpose as gaming consoles, they do not compete with the latest graphic cards that can be implemented in to more advanced PCs. The i7 processor surpasses the performance of the IBM Cell processor and its RSX Synthesizer can be easily beaten by an ATI Radeon 4870 or a NVidia GeForce GT240.

please also remember the PS3 and xbox etc will all play at a resolution far less than of a decent PC, I'm also not sure if they smooth jagged lines on console either via AA. both of which take a massive hit on performance when enabled/at high. Therefore, just to reiterate what everyone else has said, PC >PS3>xbox etx

Modified? No. More like 'crippled' would be the right word to describe it.

There were games on PC that looked better than the current PS3 games before the PS3 was even released. One of the great things about PC gaming is scalability, even most older PC games can be run at resolutions equal to or higher than 1080p because of this, for example. You also have many different graphics options like anti-aliasing that allow you to force the GPU to make an older game look better, everything on a console is static. Another big problem with consoles is the lack of memory while on a PC you can keep adding memory, regardless of the console's CPU and GPU power this causes console games to nearly always have to use lower resolution textures and they will usually mix and match high and low res textures to give you good graphics where they think it matters the most, while a PC game can use high res textures 100% of the time.
