Titoist
Any news on OS 4.0 or 3.13? That was what I was looking forward to on this years keynote.

Malisk
iPad runs 3.2 Yep, and before anyone asks, no, this version is currently not planned to be released for the iPhone. I assume it's mostly about iPad-specific stuff.
zulugod
One thing to speculate about is the ability to wallpaper the iphone's homescreen.

Titoist
It's weird that the iPad is running 3.2 cause one of the main things I notice is that in the application menu, you can change the background while on the iPhone and iPod its just Black! Shetland
Hopefully no flame war will start because of this but I think that they might just drop multitasking in for the new iphone and indeed the ipad. it will be the '...one more thing' of the next presentation. the bit they've been holding back. the ipad will definitely handle it and the new iphone probably will too. that's probably why the pad is 3.2 and not 4; because it's the feature they'll use to get you on to 4.0. Quillz
One thing to speculate about is the ability to wallpaper the iphone's homescreen. This is obviously a feature of 3.2, so I see no reason why this wouldn't be included in 4.0, which should see universal release for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. I'm curious, though... Will the iPad eventually gets its own OS, a la iPad OS 1.0 or w/e? Because it seems with the current versioning scheme, every other release (3.2, for example), would pretty much have to be iPad-exclusive. Especially if future firmware updates bring true multi-tasking to the iPad... It'd have to be its own forked OS unless they are also bringing multi-tasking to iPhone and iPod touch, as well. Not really. Just like how the video recording option in the camera recorder only appears on the 3GS, not the 3g or 2g. The ability to multitask would only be available on the fourth iphone and the ipad.
Subject Delta
Plenty of people have been saying the ability to customise would stop a lot of them jailbreaking, and as Apple are on the warpath against jailbreaking, it would make sense for them to start to put more customisation features in, then they will have another feature that other smartphones have always had :D

I wish Apple would allow for something like Candybar to run on the iPhone... Then you wouldn't have to jailbreak to run third-party themes. PyX
I don't recall anything saying that 3.2 will not be released for the iPhone, where did you guys get that? There's quite a few bugs in 3.1.2 that needed to be ironed out already and they decided not to release an update because there were already too many references to the iPad. Maybe 4.0 will be introduced in June and incorporate multitasking as one of the main changes, for both the iPad and the iPhone? I honestly don't get it that the iPad has version 3.2, I mean come on, it must have taken them thousands of hours modifying 3.1.2 to get what we have now on the iPad. It does not deserve just a x.x release point...
andrew_f
Well 3.2 SDK is iPad only right now. I think that 3.2 is a stop-gap release, there to allow iPad to run and 4.0 will be built directly upon it (perhaps with flash and multitasking, although the former seems unlikely) and will probably be announced at the next iPhone event and run on all three devices. That's the way I imagine it going anyway.
Stetson
Something to note about the OS 3.2 that was demoed at the event: Almost all of the changes were done on the application UI side. Everything new that was shown was in application UI and Apple's own apps rebuilt with the new UI tools. As far as I could see the only system-level change was the ability to change the home screen wallpaper and one button on the lockscreen. I'm guessing that the lock screen and home screen are just placeholders until OS 4.0 comes out. If they follow the same pattern as the past few years they will announce it in March and deliver it in June/July. Last year they made a big point about expanding the system APIs for developers but I didn't hear anything about OS 3.2 having any such expansion, just that it allowed developers to change their UI to fit the tablet. Yep, I think it's pretty obvious when you look at the detail and care that went into the new application UIs while the lock and home screen are literally just scaled up versions of the iPhone's. Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted January 28, 2010 Global Moderator Share Posted January 28, 2010 3.2 is the next firmware, at least there is a developers SDK for 3.2... We could possibly see 3.2 as our next firmware update. I wonder if it will allow backgrounds on the iPhone, as it does on the iPad. No news on iPhone 4.0 firmware, but i believe it will be renamed to iOS 4.

That's the way I imagine it going anyway. I wonder if Apple could cut a deal with Microsoft to use Silverlight rather than Flash, or Moonlight, the open-source rendition of Silverlight. From what I've read, it's much more efficient than Flash in terms of memory consumption but allows for the same animation properties. I would agree with the latter... The "Slide to Unlock" was taken directly from the iPhone and thus looked awkward on the much larger iPad display. I'm sure 4.0 will see some pretty substantial UI changes for the iPad.
Titoist
Is it possible that 3.2 will be available when the iPad is released (59 days). I think Apple is waiting for the release day to show 3.2 and I doubt its iPad only because the SDK is for all their touch technologies.

I think Apple is waiting for the release day to show 3.2 and I doubt its iPad only because the SDK is for all their touch technologies. The SDK was updated to work with both the iPhone and iPad. But 3.2 will be for the iPad only. All it will be adding are things that can only run on the iPad. The first universal release for all three platforms will probably be 4.0, unless there's a 3.3 or w/e.
