Growled Member Posted February 2, 2010 Member Share Posted February 2, 2010 I think they will, eventually.Apple really hates to be beholden to anyone for anything.
Shadrack
Keep in mind the reason why Apple switched from IBM/Motorola PPC processors to Intel processors was to keep up with demand. Intel was setup to turn-out enough procs to meet Apple sales. I hope that they don't switch anytime soon. The fact that Macs can run Windows is a good feature for me. I would probably not buy a Mac that can't run Windows naively because I have Windows software that I need for my livelihood.

Yes everyone seems to have forgotten about the PowerPC Chips which in the end held them back. I doubt they will switch just yet, do ARM even make Laptop/Desktop/Server CPU's and could they really keep up with demand?
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted February 5, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 5, 2010 ARM is a type of chip like x86, it's only really used in embedded systems and custom jobs. Windows Mobile runs on ARM, Windows 7 doesn't, etc.
Southern Patriot
A4 is basically slightly modified but essentially rebranded Tegra. Got a source for that? I've been hearing several different rumors, but nothing definitive. It's even possible that the chip uses the Power architecture since Apple bought P.A. Semi back in April of 2008, which has a license to produce Power-based chips. They make a chip called PWRficient that could very well be the basis for the A4. Rudy
The A4 chip WILL replace the chip used inside the iPhone and iPod Touch but it's not a desktop chip so it won't make it to the other lines (Macbook, iMac etc etc)

How do you know for sure Apple is going to be using it inside the iPhone and iPod touch?
rawr_boy81
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/ByteOfTheApple/blog/archives/2010/01/almost_40_billi.htmlAlmost forty billion dollars sitting in CASH. I highly doubt they are worried about spending a few extra dollars to get a processor that the work is ready to go and they have the software to do it. It would probably cost them a hell of a lot more to design and manufacture their own chips in comparison. I wished that they used the $40billion to buy out Adobe and then open source the Flash plugin so that it goes from major CPU succubus into something that is desirable to have pre-installed. Imagine what a complete range of applications completely Cocoa and fully optimised would be like :) *rawr_boy81 creams himself with delight* Oh my!
