Dane
So my friend and I are talking and he is wanting a macbook but isn't sure what is really best for him. He likes the unibody, but likes the updated white macbook that's cheaper. This is how I am trying to explain it to him White macbook (current updated model on their site) 2.26GHz : 250GB * 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo * 2GB DDR3 memory ***250GB hard drive*** * 8x double-layer SuperDrive * NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics * Built-in 7-hour battery * Polycarbonate unibody enclosure 13-inch: 2.26GHz Unibody. Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB Memory ***160GB hard drive*** ***SD card slot*** Built-in 7-hour battery NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics Only difference between the two is the casing, The white macbook has a bigger hard drive, has EVERYTHING ELSE, except the SD card slot. Other then that, white macbook has LED display, same battery, processor, graphics, DVD burner ect. He wants it only to do very basic things, web, mail, ect, no music or video editing. He want's to move away from Windows OS and go into the macworld. Which would be a better buy for just basic things? The white macbook to me I think is best, its cheaper, and not really different from the entry macbook pro
Dane
wtf, it hasnt been ten mins and I cant edit my post? Anyways, I've also pointed him to an imac since its the same price as the entry macbook pro, but he says he wants a laptop.
ynnoj
If he only intends to use it for basic computing tasks, then the MacBook will be perfect. However, I think the Pro line is more aesthetically pleasing. Each to their own.
Stetson
The aluminum on the MBP is nice, light, and sturdy. I also think it's a tad thinner. I haven't really held one of the new updated white Macbooks so I don't know how it really compares. The MBP also has Firewire and a backlit keyboard. If he really wants the aluminum and keyboard backlight and understands that there isn't really a performance difference then that's up to him. For pure return on your money I think that the white Macbook is better.
Dane
I'll pass the info along, thanks! Although, he says he thinks there is an update coming to the macbook pros that might make it better then the white ones. the price should stay the same as well. drshdw
The MBP has a better screen.
Dysphoria
Yeah I would go with the 13' MBP. I got the 2.26GHz with 4GB of ram and 320GB HD. It has a great battery life and is very lite and sturdy. I take it everywhere I travel...
Dane
Is the macbook pro worth it for someone for just basic stuff? Also does anyone know if there really is an update coming to them? the prices should stay the same, right?
evo0o
ive a macbook pro unibody and ive seen the macbook white making rounds in the university, i must say, im far more impressed with the mbp (aesthetically speaking) but i believe the both have approximately the same configs. the white one gets dirty and scratches easily imo. Quillz
If he's saving up for the MacBook, there's no reason he can't save up another $200 or w/e and go for the 13'' MacBook Pro, which has some VERY significant improvements. The unibody aluminum chassis, for one thing, along with a better display (it's actually been proven to be better) and some nice extras, like a backlit keyboard and (I think) superior integrated graphics. Just tell your friend to save up for the 13'' MBP, and he'll be glad he did.
ynnoj
Is the macbook pro worth it for someone for just basic stuff? Also does anyone know if there really is an update coming to them? the prices should stay the same, right? Apparently they're bringing the Core i5 and i7 chips to the MBP models. When? Nobody knows. http://gizmodo.com/5416500/macbook-pro-core-i5-and-core-i7-processors-rumored-to-arrive-in-january And yes, prices remain the same after updates. mattnotley2004
I've got the white one... but I'd prefer the unibody macbook. Why? - because it's got a far better vibrant LED screen and overall the casing seems more robust. Don't get me wrong though... I still love my macbook, and it's perfect for most everyday tasks. Shadrack
Is the macbook pro worth it for someone for just basic stuff? Also does anyone know if there really is an update coming to them? the prices should stay the same, right? I don't think whether or not he just does "basic stuff" is relevant to if you go with the MBP or white MB. It comes down to aesthetics and extra features. I actually think the additions to the MBP line makes it a much more pleasurable experience than the MacBook. I love the back light for the keyboard. I really like the cool (read: cold) feel of the aluminum, and the overall build quality is quite good. I also wanted at least 15", so it is more difficult for me to compare two 13" macs. sanctified Veteran Posted January 31, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 31, 2010 Remember that the MBP screen is superior. Also remember that the macbook pro line always gets updates in february
Dane
I went with my friend to the Apple store today, he talked to a guy there. He told them he only needs it for basic things. I was thinking "They're going to tell him go for pro..." Guy:"Go for the white macbook, it's better then the pro, you get more space. If you're doing just basic get that instead of the pro" I was kind of shocked, although I could tell the difference between the screen on the pro, and on the white macbook he said: "No the screens are the same, its just because the pro has black around it".... odd.
