PS3 and Blu-Ray problem

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I recently picked up an original 80gb PS3, CECHE01. I already knew from the previous owner that the unit was not play any BR-D media, no movies or games. Given that when I brought it home it played Ratchet and Clank for about 15 minutes before dying on me, and even recognized and almost played 500 Days of Summer in Blu-Ray, after I cleaned the lens a bit with some rubbing alcohol. But alas I figured the BR laser was dead, so I went on ebay and purchased a compatible KES-400A laser unit.

Today, the unit arrived and I gleefully installed it into my BR-D drive, expecting to start playing games and watching movies like the good 'ol days. But the result was the same as before, the unit will not recognize ANY BR-D media. I removed and re-installed the laser unit making sure that all was put in properly, and still nothing. The drive spins the disc up about 3 times in an attempt to recognize it then gives up (I loaded up a disc without the outer metal cover on the drive to see what it was doing). As before, DVD's and CD's play just fine, but Blu-Ray will not be recognized.

My question is..did I receive another faulty Blu-Ray laser? Or are there are things that can lead to these older PS3's not reading Blu-Ray? I've tried restoring my system, and no luck. NO blu-ray disc is even remotely recognized, and I'm frustrated at this point with no idea what to do. I'd love to be able to keep this PS3 since it has all the card slots and backwards compatability, but want to know where to go with troubleshooting.

If anyone has any clue, please let me know. Thanks!

Also did you buy the actual lens unit of blu Ray drive. Because if you bought the lens unit you messed up. It's always easier and cheaper in the end If you get the correct blu Ray drive

Thanks guys. I got the actual laser designated for my PS3 as I had seen tons of people replace it with success. As for the color of the lens, I'll check when I get back home, where exactly are you referring to? The ribbon clip or the actual lens?

You should, get the actual blu ray drives. Thats the most successful way to fix them. Thats what Ive done with all the 80gb's that wont read discs. I just get the same blu ray drive, put it in, bingo done.

Can't seem to find any on ebay, where did you get yours and for how much?

Thanks guys, I actually sent the lens back to the guy I bought it from to have it replaced with another one. My hopes is that the one I was sent was faulty, seeing as tons of people online have recorded changing the lens and succesfully being able to play BR-D again. I don't see how it could be -anyting- else since DVDs play fine. Replacing the lens is actually really easy and honestly there's not much else IN the drive other than the track the lens "rides" on and the mechanism for loading/spinning the disc. All of which would not cause a fault reading only blu-ray.

I'll update everyone on how the new lens works out..hopefully it works out.

Just to let everyone know, I got my replacement lens today and all is great. Fired it right up and my PS3 is now playing Blu-Ray again like a champ, for a mere $50.

Thanks for all the help!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I encountered a similar problem shortly after Christmas. However my drive does not even play DVD discs anymore.

Will a replacement lens from eBay be sufficient?

Should do, the Blu Ray drive is not hardware bound, replacing it yourself as long as the model you get is okay will do the trick.

Will replacing the BR lens cure the lack of DVD playback too? I'm assuming they use the same laser?

You need to remove the controller board from the bottom of the old Blu Ray drive and stick it onto the new one for it to work.

I'd highly reccomend just replacing the laser. It's very easy and cost only $54 shipped, just make sure you get the right laser. There are tons of articles/videos on how to do it, all it involes is removing the BR Drive case, taking off a couple of screws, taking the old laser off the tracks and putting the new one in and then closing it back up. I'm fairly confident even a 10 year old could do it.

So I've replaced the Blu-ray laser in my faulty PS3, but in doing so I've encountered/created another issue. The drive will no longer accept any kind of disc. By this I mean that the disc must be physically forced into the drive (which I haven't done for obvious reasons), and that the drive no longer 'eats' the disc.

The laser itself is fine, so I think the problem lies with the motor that takes in the disc and raises the laser. Either way, there is an obvious issue in the process which has me baffled.

Any suggestions?

I've managed to get the drive to accept discs, however it refuses to read anything just like the previous lens. I'm reluctant to call it a bust because it appeared new when it arrived yesterday, though chances are it's still a write off.

Is there a possibility the new lens alignment could be off due to all of the fiddling I have had to do?
