Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 Graphics

Players given the opportunity to playtest the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Final Fantasy XIII side-by-side have been reporting the in-game graphics of the Xbox 360 version are noticeably inferior to those of the PS3.

Square Enix?s marketing activities, in the form of a touring bus, have given US fans the chance to play both:

From a real person:

I went to the Sunnyvale one today and got to play the 360 version. I am so very disappointed to see the difference in textures and detail of the 360 version vs. the PS3. =( I know it?s DVD vs. BD, but I didn?t think it would be that noticeable. My boyfriend told me it?s fine if I wanna stick with the 360 version, but he?s going for the PS3 one now.

From a game journalist:

Both PS3s and 360s were being used to show off the game, which was great as I was able to see both versions running side-by-side. As expected, the 360 version was noticeably less crisp than its PS3 counterpart, but it still ran nicely.

Additionally, the developers recently made an interesting admission:

It was easy to port to the Xbox. Porting to the PS3 is harder. The PS3 has more processing power but you have to do it properly.

The only difference reported previously was that the movies and sound on the Xbox 360 would be substantially lower quality in order to cram the game onto 3 DVDs ? in-game graphical differences were said to be absent.

International fans planning to purchase the Xbox version are understandably dismayed by this, although at least it seems to demonstrate the game was not intentionally crippled on the PS3 in order to accommodate the port.

The games are actually running on different engines when it comes to graphics

Didn't the simultaneous development on both the PS3 and the XBOX360 cause difficulties?

KITASE: We have made it our top priority to deliver the same quality on both consoles. It was self-evident that it brought some difficulties with it. Both consoles require a different approach. Especially on the graphics section. We had to build a different engine for both versions. We needed a year of tinkering on each engine in order to get the same level of graphics.

I suspect the FMVs are where it will be hit worst, PS3 will no doubt be 1080p native, 360 either 720p scaled, or 1080p native but a lower bitrate.

I figured it would just be sound and FMV differences. Somewhere there's a rumor about the 360 version losing 15GB, but I think that's mostly FMV.

I know it's been joked about, but I wonder if the 360 port (and disc space) did gimp the game a bit (linear, no towns, etc.), considering the amount that was supposedly cut from the game.

This was expected anyway. They have limited space to put the Texture images, which are rendered i would expect for a 1080 experience, So they would be rather large, Not to mention the Audio for the full voice acting. so they would have to dumb some things down so it isnt 5 DVDs long.

I don't think that rumor about the 15GB "lost" means it's been dumped, I think it just means the overall game got compressed FMV wise to the point that there's that much of a difference. With how you look at it, the different audio tracks between the two alone is probably something like 2-4GB only, if not more. And good compression of video can shave off a large chunk as well.

I'd like to see some screenshots of them side-by-side, I'm sure those will popup in another month.

i figured the same thing. blu rays have WAYYYY more space for textures, audios and FMVs. Sticking with regular dual layers dvd is definitely beggining to hurt the 360. and if they plan on keeping this console for 10 years, it's only going to get worse and worse.

wait somebody said hentai

on to the other topic lol, i usually only buy my games for 360, but even i'll admit this is game designed for the PS3 and best experienced on the PS3 rather than the 360, simply because of the way that Japanese developers favor pre-rendered movies in their games and because of blu-ray. I'm not going to switch 3-5 or however many disks it is for the 360 version.

I doubt that, the only time this is an issue is mostly for RPGs, but it seems square wanted to stick to 3 DVDs though they could just as well used 4 like Lost Odyssey did without any problems and have another 8GB to work with. It's up to the developer really. Either way, the vast majority of games, action/FPS etc, aren't jammed with hours after hours of prerended FMVs like square gets off on doing in their games. So for most things it's not really that big of an issue at all.

It costs publishers more money the more discs they use, that has to be kept in mind as well (not just the discs themselves, but the box packaging also).

I would certainly hope the PS3 version is better, after all they have better hardware, lol.

Is texture detail that big of an issue when it comes to a menu-driven turn-based game?

Based on several previews you can find online, the texture differences between both platforms are very small

This doesn't deter me at all. I'm sure it will look perfectly beautiful for those of us who haven't seen side-by-side comparisons. Chances are some of these people were just trolling anyway, hoping to upset 360 owners.

Still excited to play my first Final Fantasy game no matter how hard Square Enix deters me. :p

First?

Play, 7,8,9 please before 13. Even 10, or if you can hack old school 6.

Not surprised, was planning to pick this up on the PS3 anyway (hard to explain, but feels wrong playing a FF on the Xbox 360) so doesn't bother me anyway :p

Ha ha ha nice! Well I never had a PS2 and am only able to play what a friend has (who used to have one). It has to be some kind of cardinal sin that he doesn't have a FF game so blame him, not me! :p

If you're not into role playing games not really, but FF7/FF8/FF9 really need to be played, Square on top form, much better than FF13 from the looks of it.

Well that also depends on who you ask. I know people who hate 8 and 9, everyone seems to love 7 but I think they'

re bias since it was the first of the "new" 3D CGI ones. Then there are also people who like 7 and 8 and hate 9 and so on. My sister loves 8 to death, cuz of the music mostly, she goes crazy for the opening scene music.

Who knows, i'm fine playing it on the 360 in the end. Side by side screenshots will show up for sure either way. It's not so much that one is better than the other, I think it was expected in a way. The bigger story out of all of this is how the game is multiplatform to begin with.
