SkyDX
Hello fellow Neowin members, to my surprise I got gifted with a Snow Leopard retail disk today. The person knew I have no Mac, but he firmly believed in my Hackintosh skills  Anyways I read the OSx86 Wiki compatibility list and I know that there are OSx86 forums but I was treated not very well there in the past so I thought of trying it in a more friendly and helpful community^^ Anyway this is my PC: Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-MA770-DS3 CPU: AMD Phenom I x4 9850 Black Edition @ 2.5Ghz RAM: 3GB DDR2 @ 800mhz GFX: SAPPHIRE ATI Radeon HD4850 512mb BIOS: is set to SATA --> AHCI HDDs: [internal IDE 1 180GB] Partition 1: some stuff Partition 2: some stuff [internal IDE 2 40GB] Partition 1: Vista [internal SATA 1 80GB] Partition 1: Ubuntu (WUBI) [internal SATA 2 300GB Bootloader sits here] Partition 1: Win7 Partition 2: some stuff Partition 3: old, not working OSX 10.5.7 install (80GB) As you can see I already have a old OSx86 install but ever since I switched to a HDMI-->DVI cable it simply boots into a light blue screen, otherwise is worked quite well. So what are my chances with Snow Leopard? The only thing I could find in the compatibility list is that the GFX card should work without problems this time, my other hardware wasn't listed. I read alot about PC EFI, Chameleon Bootloaders, EFI strings and whatnot but it all confused the hell out of me.... The only things I want to avoid: - flashing any BIOS' - repartition anything ( I have a OSX partition already so...) - and the most important thing, I don't want to install any other bootloader as my primary bootloader. Ever since way back in 2005 I always had trouble with non Windows bootloaders, I installed my old 10.5.7 without one and simply added it to Vistas/7s BCD which worked like a charm Any help is greatly appreciated! richardsim7
Your best bet is to check the Insanelymac forum, see if there's a guide for your mobo http://www.insanelymac.com/search.php?cx=001515782708938219747%3A_l4ohnzhaku&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=GA-MA770-DS3#978 :)
SkyDX
Thanks for the swift reply! Unfortunately I couldn't find any guide :( I would just go ahead and install it but I need patches for my AMD CPU, right?
SkyDX
Sorry for double post, I couldn't edit the other anymore... What I wanted to say additionally: EDIT: As an alternative, someone could also help me getting 10.5.7. to work again :p Like said it worked fine with a VGA cable, now it only boots into a blue screen with a DVI-->HDMI cable USB was also somewhat unreliable as often USB devices simply stopped working. Not to mention the Kernal Panics I always got when I tried any virtualization xD
Max Veteran Posted February 1, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 1, 2010 You will need a different kernel to support the AMD processor, also regarding the VGA thing, try running it with a DVI adaptor in the other port if you get the blue screen. Its a strange fix, but after having one DVI port go to the monitor and the other with just the DVI>VGA adaptor plugged in worked wonders.
SkyDX
Yeah well, any particular kernel I should look for? And really thanks for the DVI adaptor trick, will try that now^^ Should I prefer a combination? Like adaptor right, cable left or vice versa? I knew Neowin wouldn't let me down :D
SkyDX
Again no edit possible.... >_> No success with the adaptor trick, even booting with -x results in a blue screen. I tried to connect my HD monitor over VGA, the result was no blue screen, just the monitor shut down after booting. I guess I can kill that 10.5.7 eh? Kingv84
Windows 7 will run great on your PC.
cabron
Windows 7 will run great on your PC. I agree, there is not point at all in running an illegal configuration. If you really love OS X, buy a Mac.
Shadrack
Is AMD supported? I thought that only Intel is. One word of advice, once you get everything setup the way you want and running properly make an image of your setup. I don't know how many times I've ruined a perfectly good Hackintosh install by trying to get a hack to work and ended up making the partition unbootable. It is hard to troubleshoot as well. Plan to have an aggressive backup strategy (i.e., regular image backup as well as file backup). InsanelyMac forums will give you more support (both technically and morally) than this one. Not true, my PC in my sig runs both OS X and Windows 7 PERFECTLY, and at a third of the cost of the equivalent Mac :)
