neudera
Ok, I have a question, but before I present it I need to clarify... Swearing is a poor way of expressing yourself, I understand that. However when you are frustrated or angry, it only makes it more you more irritated to have to resort to conveying your feelings by modifying your words in order to sound like some high-and-mighty jackass. And if someone can say the word shi... on TV, and Neowin won't even allow the word pis...ed, what is the market you are trying to attract? Little kids or nerds with an ego complex? Sorry to say, but on occasion, normal adults need to swear to show the simple expression of how they're feeling. Not that Neowin will actually take my suggestion seriously, I just felt the need to get that off my chest.
Steven P. Administrators Posted February 3, 2010 Administrators Share Posted February 3, 2010 While I personally would like to see no restrictions in word filtering, I'm afraid there are a few who would abuse the privilege, so we have to decide for them; You know like a child who can't be held responsible for his/her actions. I'm not speaking for everyone when I say this btw. Then there is a group of people who will just bitch and moan about the site no longer being work safe or that they are offended by what's in posts etc etc.. there are many examples. It's more trouble than it's worth imo.
Leo Natan
I think there are scripts that allow toggling that filter on/off per user basis. So anyone who cannot afford such words, or just doesn't want to see them, can turn them off in the control panel. Should be a good compromise? +jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted February 4, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted February 4, 2010 Swear words aren't masked, they're completely censored. Even with a script 100% of all swears will remain as ****'s until after the scripts put in. .. Which sounds like a really intensive modification, might I add! MikeChipshop Member Posted February 7, 2010 Member Share Posted February 7, 2010 I believe that swear words are a perfectly sensible way of expressing yourself, much great literature of the past and present utilizes swearing as this can be some of the most moving, descriptive, provoking and expressive words and terms in human language. However as not everyone feels like this, it would be stupid to force a new way of doing things on users and possible get them into trouble with work. Subject Delta
Usually I am against swear filtering, but in the case of Neowin, I feel it is the lesser of 2 evils, as with the high concentration of keyboard warriors that infest large forums like this, it stands to reason that there are plenty of people that would abuse it and use it to flame each other. Not to mention Neowin is a site used by a fair few under 16s.
Barney T. Administrators Posted February 7, 2010 Administrators Share Posted February 7, 2010 Here is my general feelings about posting swear words and using the swear filter: What if we did have the swear filter and allowed posting of all kinds of curse words across the board, knowing there would be caught and altered? Post after post littered with asterisk laden cuss words. Would that really create a professional tech site? I realize that the word filter is in place for the few who abuse the language, but personally, I think we need to maintain an air of common courtesy and professionalism for our fellow reader. We just upgraded to a new, sparking IPB3 site. Why would we want immature, swear word laden posts to lower our standards? Otherwise, it would be hard for the professional and casual reader alike to take us seriously. My 2 cents....
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted February 7, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted February 7, 2010 Neowin has a lot of idiots and so censorship is needed. Personally, I find costructive use of certain swear words to be wholly valid.
SimplySchizo
Wouldn't it be easier to weed out the troublemakers by lightening up the filter? Anyone who abuses it could easily be singled out and dealt with accordingly. It would also give others a heads up on the type of person they'd be dealing with on a regular basis. I'm all for a more lenient swear filter. Why not, when there are plenty videos floating within neowin with intense profane language, labeling it NSFW doesn't make it any better. If these videos are allowed, is there really a reason to filter out written swears?

Farstrider
In my experience, sites that do not make a huge hoo ha about swear words, the number of people who actually use these terribly naughty words are in the minority! I know the Sexist Woman thread is not safe for work, so I don't click on it from there. Problem solved. Ugh, look. Many companies have blocking software in place, especially schools. People who make blocking software look at these type of websites and if it has swearing, they classify it. When people use that blocking software, then boom, you got neowin.net blocked. If Neowin turns around and allows it, then say good bye to Neowin at work because the blocking software will get updated with Neowin marked as blocked. Just because you do not click on something, does not mean you are safe. We already have enough swear words allowed, isn't ass and bitch enough for you? I'm sorry but the f bomb is just too much, you do not need it. gigapixels and Cupcakes 2 Share

DirtyLarry Veteran Posted February 15, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 15, 2010 Honestly I tend to talk like the most foul mouthed of truck drivers in real life. I use the F word in conjunction with so many different words to form my own new words it is not even funny. Yet I have really never had any issue at all with not being able to curse here on the forums. Truth be told, there are plenty of words one can use in place of the typical curse words to express themselves in a nearly identical if not the same exact manner that they wanted to convey if using a curse word. Sethos
Swear words are often used to express frustration and having to use alternate words that are a lot less 'punchy' just frustrates you even more. It pains me when I have to sit there, think up new sentences and words because a commonly used word is "Oh so bad for the kids and sensitive souls". So personally, I'd love to see a user option to disable the filter but I'm guessing it won't happen and have to settle for what we have now. And yes, I'd much rather read a post with some swearing than some completely sober and 'mature' post, it's so unnatural for me and seems so fake. Roadrunna
Son Of a Buick For Chrysler Sake Someone Chevied All Over My Ford v8 You have to admit that makes for a more interesting read than 'Son of a ***** for ***** sake someone ****** all over my **** v8'. I'm not bothered by swearing but some people just love to over-use the f-truck and c-punt words to inflate their word counts. I would really love to see a txt filter though, mobile phones really have encouraged bad writing/typing skills. If you can't be bothered to type properly then what you have to say isn't important. Yes, I know Ford isn't a swear word but "Fix Or Repair Daily' have really annoyed me in the past.
dead.cell
Personally, I find pi-- and bast--- to be rather trivial when it comes to censoring. I mean, by high school, no one really cared if you used the word. I didn't go to a "ghetto" high school either. No one really saw it as that bad of a word, provided you didn't use it towards a teacher. (as you wouldn't tell your teacher you need to **** or to **** off) It also makes it difficult when you have 3 four letter words to choose from when attempting to fill in the blanks here just to figure out what some people are saying. As for bast---, I am one by the very definition. Don't really understand why it's censored either, unless it's a British thing. Don't really know anyone who uses that though as any kind of an insult, aside from the occasional South Park humor of Kenny dying. (which is old these days) As for the other censored words, I'm perfectly okay with them being censored. Going to a forum where people can use the F word really puts me off, as it can create a very unwelcoming atmosphere.

Sethos
Frustration in forums tends to lead to flame wars, just saying. Depends on the context, yes it can lead to flame wars if you aim it at someone instead of a situation or something. So swearing alone does not lead to flame wars, that's up to the person behind the monitor to do that.
Brian M. Veteran Posted February 15, 2010 Veteran Share Posted February 15, 2010 IMO you can say anything you need to say without swearing, and it's usually more amusing. For example, say "It really cheesed me off" instead of "It really ****ed me off".
